On 21 March each year, Australia celebrates ‘Harmony Day’, rather than observing the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD), as declared by the United Nations in 1966.

marks a (re)commitment to a world free from all forms of racism and related intolerances, racial discrimination, segregation, and other racial barriers.

Harmony Day, on the other hand, celebrates social cohesion and multiculturalism; while these are important, they shift away from discussing racism and anti-racism.
