I took this photo last Thursday in our Muay Thai class. If I had been thinking I would have taken another one of just as many amazing humans in our Zen Do Kai class.

I need to take more of these photos.

The reality is, that in the greater majority of our classes, sometimes up to half of the participants are females..... And it is juuuuust brilliant.

When I started Martial Arts women in classes was not rare, but I would say uncommon, maybe 10% of the floor. One of the main goals I have always had, was to provide a space that no matter your age, gender, or any other variable, you were safe, included, and you were empowered.

And as I became a father of two daughters, this became even more important.

I reckon... Mission accomplished...

But don't be fooled... These ladies on any day work harder than the blokes, don't take any shortcuts, and they kick HARD.

So.... No more waiting.. Be part of something that is SO much bigger a picture than you think.

Time to Back Yourself.

Photos from CMA - Chikara Martial Arts's post 26/10/2024

Last Sunday, we had a little adventure for our Zen Do Kai and Muay Thai students that are attempting black ranks and also 2nd degree ranks through the wilderness just outside the CBD of Bris Vegas.

We have always had a "fitness test" associated with our adult students attempting these ranks to assess there ability to push themselves, but a few years ago we reinvented it, and we now do a pretty solid hike (4 odd hours), with a few twists and turns as we go.

They had a bunch of our black ranks and instructors come along and sacrifice their Sunday morning to help, but I think they enjoyed it more than they were letting on.

Each of them had to carry a backpack, with some bricks in them. The bricks symbolised the weight on your shoulders that can come with being a black rank, and more than once, they had to carry someone else's pack, to symbolise the fact that they will have to more than once carry their team mates, and take the load for them, both on and off the mats.

The supporters would carry their packs for them at times too, to symbolise that they would always be there to help them along the way as well, and were never exempt from a little hard work.

And of course, as you can see, there were a few other surprises thrown in.

They also had to pair up with different partners throughout the hike, and share their dreams, fears, why they are here, when and why they have wanted to quit, and what in them would not let them happen.

And, all the supporters had to speak for a couple of minutes at different intervals, and tell them what it means to them to be a Bob Jones Martial Arts Black Rank, and what it means to them to be a member of CMA.

It was tough, but they all did great, and it was an amazing experience.

Well done you amazing humans... I am honoured to be part of your lives, and proud of each and every one of you.

Purple is I think the hardest belt to get in Jiu Jitsu. Blue belt (the first belt) is hard, you have to be consistent, and push at it, but do the work, and you'll get there.

Purple belt can be the longest break in between promotions, and therefore the longest amount of time to doubt yourself, get frustrated, get hurt, have a "break" and maybe even just pack it in and quit.

It's competitive too, as you will have the younger bucks nipping at your heels, having youth, strength, and speed on their side.

But there are two things they quite often do not have.

Patience, and wisdom.....

If you have a look at the photo, the three amazing humans that we recently promoted to purple belt are 40 plus (okay a couple are 50 plus), but have stuck it out, been both the hammer and the nail, watched the young bucks come at them, keep them at bay, and they are still here....

So here they are...

It was an absolute honour to present these ranks to these work horses again with my mate Max de Been, and they true to form, could not have been any more humbled with the decision.

Please welcome Kyl Reber Jiu Jitsu's newest Purple Belts, Matt Gray, Joe Pippia, and Damian Pitts.

It was fantastic on the weekend to do a seminar with a force in not just Australian Jiu Jitsu, but world Jui Jitsu, Adele Fornarino.

Not every day you get to meet, learn and for a couple of the crew roll with Australia's FIRST ADCC Jiu Jitsu champion. For those who don't know what is, that is a BIG deal.

I found it fantastic for two reasons.

For me, it was good to really step out of my comfort zone, and have some of my regular "habits" challenged with new thought processes, and seeing the merit in it. I really enjoyed that. It's been a long time since I have been to a seminar, and yes, it took a little bit, but I loved it, and as I always say, influence over authority.

Second thing..... It was great to see the guys enthralled in what she was teaching, and taking it all in, along with being a little star struck. I think a lot of coaches would have trouble with that, and I have over the years, as we want to think we have all the answers, but we don't, and the more information we seek, and take in, the more we can give back.

And probably the third thing... It was great watching a 14 year old girl watch her, and see that maybe.... With a little bit of hard work...... Those dreams are possible.

It was a fantastic few hours, and thank you so much to the team at Arte Suave for hosting and welcoming us.

Look forward to watching what this little pocket rocket can do next.

The thing I love with Martial Arts more than anything else these days is we have so much accessibility to training and instruction from all over the world. We have a chance to now mix with people from all over the world that like us are training, building relationships, and finding out their true potential.

We can communicate with people across the world, jump on a plane, or drive wherever, and get so much information to share with others.

This has always been a priority at CMA, and it is going to be turned up to eleven in 2025, as we already have trips planned, seminars to attend, and training in all aspects of the arts we teach in order to pass on even more information to our students.

Because, as we have always said, if you think that all the answers you seek are within the four walls of your club, you are halting your progression, and the progression of your peers more than you could imagine.

With our annual trip to Thailand so far having more than 20 people locked in, and other trips in the mix, our goal is to go and get the info, then bring it back into what we do, and continue to grow our people and our culture.

The photo here is the perfect example of the relationships you form. Sylvie von Duuglas - Ittu is living a dream in Thailand as quite possibly one of the most experienced combat sport athletes in the world, getting out of her comfort zone on a daily basis, and growing miles at a time.

And..... One of the most humble and down to earth people you will meet, and CMA is so proud to play just the slightest part in her progression. Photo credit here to Kevin von Duuglas - Ittu for catching this moment.

I know this may sound harsh, but one thing not all of us are doing as parents is just adding that one extra notch when it comes to pushing our kids.

They are not meant to love their sport every day, just like you don't love your job every day, but you still go, and we have to instill in them that exact way of thinking.

Sport is hard
Life is hard
Being a good person is hard
Turning up when you feel you are getting nowhere is HARD.

But you need to keep believing in them, reminding them that this is part of the process, and that for every day that it is really hard, and you want to quit it, there will be HUNDREDS of other days where you can feel yourself improving by the second...

I look at parenting and coaching in the same vein. We have a chance with every kid to alter their pattern of thought, and every time we do it we have to make sure we are doing the same. It's a gift.

This is my mate Cooper. Cooper I think would admit he would admit that he has had all the feelings above, and even on this night, the irony is that you could see he was having a pretty ordinary night on the mats, and having that feeling he was getting nowhere.

And that made giving him his next belt, so much more special, because on that night, when he was pretty low, he saw a light.

Well done mate. Just keep pushing on.

Please congratulate Kyl Reber Jiu JItsu's Newest Orange Belt, Cooper Lawson.

We have had a fair bit going in CMA land of late, with more to come as the year closes up, so we will be playing a little catch up on some big things that been happening.

Here's the first one.....

Twelve years... We are pretty sure it's that long for this one..

This guy has a heart that I believe is actually bigger than his biceps (if that is even possible), and it shows every time he is on the mat not just being a menace to me in rolls (although I am pretty sure if he wanted to he could just pick me up and throw me through the window), but also so willing to help our new people, and give them guidance, which just warms my heart to see.

And don't worry, he may be covered in tattoos, and looks pretty scary, but I got him to shed a little tear when I called out his name... So he isn't all scary.

He is one of those people that has stuck by me through thick and thin, through some massive peaks and troughs, and I know he will continue to do so, because he also one of the "uncles" my kids have at CMA, so I trust this guy to wear this belt with pride, and honour.

And the icing on the cake, was having my little mate Max de Been with me when I did it. They are all special, and this was made that little bit more special having him there.

Please welcome Kyl Reber Jiu Jitsu's newest Black Belt, Joe Harley.

Jake is all weighed in with ease, and ready to go at Beatdown Promotions tomorrow night!!!!

He’s the fittest and best I think I have ever seen him, and I can’t wait to see him give it a real go tomorrow night.

There’s been a long build for this one, and he’s been through some tough sessions.

So, time to get in there tomorrow night and let it all out, because our mantra for this one has been simple.

β€œDon’t save anything for later.”

Thanks to everyone that has supported him. No matter what happens, this guy is not the same person he was when he came in here, for all the right reasons.

At the end of every series of classes without fail, the mats are sprayed and mopped, the floor is vacuumed, and the pads are wiped down just the same.

The saying I always say is β€œyou all used it, so you all clean it up.”

The simple answer for this is it’s for hygiene, and to prevent any nasties - which is 100% true.

The philosophical answer, is it teaches people, especially our younger people, to respect the gear that they need to train, and also to understand that this gear is for everyone to use, and they must treat it with respect.

You value something you respect, and it helps you understand the big picture of Martial Arts.

We could just get a cleaner…… Nut the lesson would be lost…. It’s not free labour…. It’s teaching lessons that will carry on off the mats.

And we had more than one parent say that their kids clean up our place more than they clean up in their own house. 🏠 πŸ˜‚

Because more than anything else…. It teaches them values.

Term 4 is well underway, so get in touch, and let’s set up you or your tiny human with a FREE Trial class.

Let’s teach our young people Back Themselves. πŸ₯ŠπŸ₯‹

An absolute MONSTER of a seminar Wednesday might with 2nd degree black belt Max de Been.

So many good people in the one spot, all working together, all helping each other get better. It was so fantastic to show Max our culture and community.

And, it was amazing to get some long overdue one on one time with him too. He’s a bloody good kid.

Thank you to EVERYONE that supported the night.

More to come.

I'm really excited about tonight. It's been years since I caught up with this little fella.

I think he was a 15 or so year old purple belt kicking my butt when I first met him, and I have watched him grow into a bloody good human, an extremely competent Martial Artist, and a just an all round good person.

I can't wait to show him our community and culture tonight when he coaches a Kids and Adults session.

If you are keen to come and do a session with Max De Been, the youngest Australian to be awarded a BJJ black belt, we still have some spaces. Email [email protected] for details.

It's gonna be a great night...

WE HAVE AN EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

We are very pleased to announce that IVY REBER HAS BEEN ACCEPTED AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR BRAUS FIGHT WEAR!!

Ivy has been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the last 10 or so years, so when you take into account she is still only 14, that's a while, and she now really starting to really see what she is capable of.

The last two years in particular for Ivy have been full of competition both on the mat with BJJ, and now Muay Thai as well. It is so good to see her have this opportunity, and the chance to maybe take this to the next level.

She has also earned this fair and square. Anyone at CMA knows she is at the gym on the mat nearly every day, rolling, Muay Thai or fight team training.

Hard work pays off.

Ivy will be repping and using Braus gear, and she now has a discount code for anyone wanting to get 10% OFF EVERY PURCHASE!!

Got to the following link to check out the Braus gear, which is great stuff, and their service is super professional.

https://brausfight.com?bg_ref=cgpxeOyGfv

And when you find what you would like, use this code at check out.

ivytheruckus

And follow her on Instagram

You can also find her coaching the kids Muay Thai and Kids BJJ classes, mentoring the next generation of fine humans.

Good gives good back...

I made a little promise to myself the last time we caught up a month or so ago, that I would not let it go any longer than necessary when we caught up, and not miss out on opportunities any longer.

I also said to Helen that she needed to get down and see the Old Man before the year was out, to get some more time in, as it has been to long for her, and he does love her.

For those who do not know, the gentlemen in the middle is Bob Jones, the founder of Zen Do Kai, and one of the pioneers of Martial Arts in Australia.

So anyway, we made a dash, doing not even 24 hours in Melbourne, squeezed in a decent walk this morning to witness some AFL Grand Final madness (because we had no idea it was on when we booked), and made it happen.

A nearly 3 hour lunch, some great chats, and some more time in the bank.

When we left and went for a walk after lunch, we both agreed how grateful we were for that time. I know, it sounds cheesy, but I still can't believe the relationship I now have with this amazing human. I certainly don't take it for granted.

And the reality is.... Had this guy not done what he has done, and started what he started... I would never have met this chick, and those two amazing daughters I have would not exist.

I'll be back soon enough, and the calls will be regular.

Love you Chief..... And as always... Thank you.

This popped up as a memory... 1999 I think??

That's how long we have been teaching in the west.

Please excuse my lack of beard that makes me look fourteen.

This was on the original Bob Jones Martial Arts website as an instructor profile. YIKES!

It's funny looking back now, at the ambition I had, and the favourite aspect of training, because, they happened.

It was all just a process I guess. I'm not a believer in goals, but I'm a big believer in processes. I even say it back then.

Put the belt on, take the belt off, put it on, take it off...

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Have a good day, have a bad day, good, bad, but keep doing the process.

Do that, and the goals will happen.

If you just focus on goals, there is no process, and then nothing to keep doing after the goal. Let the processes be essence of the work, then all your goals will "just happen."

Looking forward to the next 30 or so years of processes.

Just thank god the photo of me with the bleached blonde hair wasn't used. 😳😳

Get in touch with us, and we will help you trust the process.
