Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) incorporates seasonal shifts when it comes to diet and lifestyle habits. Switching up the foods you consume and your exercise regime as the temperature increases can have a range of benefits, from improved digestion to better mood and productivity.
Here are some of the best ways to include TCM summer foods:
1. Make a summery smoothie with seasonal fruits and vegetables and add to your favourite type of milk and protein powder for a satiating, cooling breakfast or snack.
2. Add summer fruits and herbs to a jug of water and allow the delicious flavours to infuse - try slices of citrus fruits, strawberries, blueberries, mint or lemon balm.
3. Maintain that yin and yang even in the heat! Stay balanced by adding raw foods like salads to cooked foods such as a curry or a protein source.
4. Bliss bowls that include some cooked grain and root veg, salad greens and fresh herbs are a perfect meal for maintaining that hot/cold food balance.
5. Keep alcohol to a minimum - enjoy beverages like herbal teas that work with the summer heat to remove toxins from the liver and gallbladder. Chrysanthemum, as well as green tea and white tea, are TCM summer favourites.

Our latest blog "How stress can affect your immune system" explains how high stress levels can affect your immune system by suppressing its role in protecting the body against pathogens and diseases.
Chronic stress can produce higher levels of cortisol (also known as the stress hormone) and the body perceives itself to be under threat and activates your fight or flight response, which can cause inflammation, burnout, and increased frequency of illness.

Have you ever noticed how much more alive and vibrant you feel when you spend time outdoors in nature, and especially when you exercise outdoors?
Qi is one of the most important concepts in traditional Chinese medicine or TCM, and can be summed up as 'life force energy' or 'vitality.
We absorb Qi from our food, and also inhale it with the air every time we take a breath. Your lungs process the airborne Qi and use it to strengthen the blood and energy channels.
When you exercise in an environment with clean, fresh air - like the beach or at a park - you're breathing in air that's rich in energising Qi!
So, our top health tip for today is to think about the most pleasant, healthy environment you could go to for your walk, run or yoga session today, and then get out there and breathe in the fresh air!

Exercise, sunshine and fresh air not only improve your mood and get the blood pumping, but they also support the healthy function of the immune system. 🌞
A 2018 study conducted at the University of Bath found that exercise helps the immune system to locate and destroy viruses and bacteria.
When it comes to preventing infection we don’t often think about gut health, but it’s estimated that around 70% of the immune system is in the gut.
How does exercise tie into this? Research shows that people with higher levels of aerobic fitness also tend to have a wider variety of healthy bacteria in their guts, regardless of their diets.
Exercise can also increase the amounts of healthy bacteria that produce a substance called butyrate, which is an indicator of both overall health and a healthy gut.
If you’re new to a particular exercise or haven’t exercised in some time:
➡️ It’s always best to check in with your GP and get the all-clear before you start – then take it slowly to avoid injuries to muscles that may not be used to the movements.
➡️ Exercising for immunity involves a degree of mindfulness and respect for what your body needs or is feeling from day to day. Start by choosing an activity you love and go from there.

As the holidays are a time where many of us indulge more than usual, extra herbal support is something that we could all probably use more of over the summer holiday season.
According to TCM philosophy, a stagnant liver generates heat in the body (called an internal heat pattern), which can compromise its ability to perform its detoxification functions.
When this occurs, baical skullcap is traditionally taken in Chinese medicine to clear excess damp-heat from the liver and support the body’s natural detoxification processes in patterns of internal heat.
Find baical skullcap alongside milk thistle, which supports liver health, in Fusion Liver Tonic.

Qi is one of the most important concepts in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which inspires so much of what we do here at Fusion Health.
What is Qi? (pronounced 'chee')
Qi is often defined as 'life force' or 'energy'.
Qi is in constant motion and flows through the body via the organs and meridians (energy channels). As it travels, Qi invigorates your body, mind and senses. It provides the capacity for thought and emotion, and other useful abilities like imagination, willpower and decision-making.
Another of Qi's roles in the body is to enable transformation in its many different forms, including:
➡️ Growth
➡️ Digestion
➡️ Reproduction
➡️ Ageing
Without Qi, you simply wouldn't be able to function - in TCM it's regarded as the driver of all physiological activity.
