A thrill to be able to sing with one of the finest trumpeters in the world, James Morrisson, last year in Sydney Town Hall.
This is Liam Gallagher’s opening song from his new album & it was a real privilege for the choristers to sing on this track. So happy that it’s turned out even better than I remember! The boys were so excited when they recorded it, as we had just come out of Covid lockdowns two years ago here in Sydney. Brilliant song and album, Liam!

This morning we are giving thanks at the Cathedral for the 70 years of service given by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. We will also celebrate this Platinum Jubilee this week with the first Evensong of the new year, this coming Thursday, 10th February at 5.15pm. The service will feature special royal music, as well as the Royal Anthem, God save the Queen. Here is a recording of us singing it in the presence of Her Majesty in her last visit to St Andrew’s in 2006.
Her Majesty, for her coronation day, asked the people of the Commonwealth to “pray for me that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.”

Our Story
‘One of the best Choirs I have ever heard’ was the response of HRH Prince William and Kate, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after attending the Easter service in 2014. As the oldest continuous musical institution in Australia, the St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir has nurtured some of Australia’s finest voices and musical talent. The role-call of former members include Musica Viva’s Ken Tribe, Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, international Opera stars Stuart Skelton, Andrew Goodwin, David Hansen, French horn virtuoso & conductor Barry Tuckwell and the first Prime Minister of Australia, Sir Edmund Barton, as well as one half of Australia’s The Presets: Julian Hamilton and more recent pop stars Cosmo’s Midnight and Wild Eyed Boy.
St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir has upheld the heritage of sacred choral music for 200 years in Australia and has played a vibrant and vital role in the education of young boys, as well as making a significant contribution to the national life of Australia, through singing at some of the country’s major events, such as visits from HM the Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Choristers are educated at one of Sydney’s oldest schools, St Andrew’s Cathedral School, which was established in 1885 by Bishop Barry (the third Bishop of Sydney) for the purpose of educating the choristers to sing the services at the Cathedral. Through its tours and recordings the Cathedral Choir has won an international reputation, and has led the music at most significant Anglican churches & cathedrals in Europe. During the past few years the choir has sung with many notable ensembles, such as the Choir of Westminster Abbey and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and Orchestra and in 2014 was awarded the unique privilege of performing with the Choir of King’s College Cambridge and their eminent Director, Sir Stephen Cleobury, CBE. At the end of 2017 two of our Choristers were invited to join the trebles in the choir of King’s College Cambridge. The Choristers of St Andrew’s have also provided the musical soundtrack for two feature films, and have featured many times on television, even on the ABC’s Playschool. The Choristers regularly provide soloists for Opera Australia’s productions at Sydney Opera House.
This year is the Choir’s 200th Anniversary year, as the Choir was formed to sing at the inaugural service for the Cathedral with the laying of the foundation stone by Governor Macquarie in 1819. The Cathedral Choir has a musical feast planned this year to celebrate and the celebrations will culminate at the end of the year with a 200th Anniversary Tour to Europe, visiting some of the finest places to sing in the world. The Choir is fundraising for this tour and if you would be interested in supporting this tour financially please contact [email protected]
The Director of Music, Ross Cobb, is always very keen to hear boys sing for an informal audition, please contact him on 02 9265 1674, or at [email protected]. The Choristers receive a generous scholarship from our school, St Andrew’s Cathedral School, where they receive a first-class education in addition to their musical training.
