Discover the works of our latest Artist in Residence Trish Verdouw; a Tasmanian-based contemporary artist who uses the process of walking and drawing to become part of ‘place’.
Trish conveys both the macrocosm and microcosm of Pipe Clay Lagoon on the South Arm Peninsula by using charcoal, ink and liquid graphite as her medium. The repetition of line and form are key factors in her works - evoking rhythm and movement, accentuating patterns and incorporating the intertwining line of her walk with all inhabitants that live on the tidal line.
Being immersed and connected to place is important, as Trish interprets her observations through her latest works.

From the artist:
“In 2015, I went in search of a landscape that I briefly glimpsed on an ABC news report. The water level at Lake Gordon had fallen by 45 meters and a drowned forest had been revealed. It appeared to be an extraordinary scene of tree wreckage and this previously logged forest now stood in the daylight. It was a chaotic spectacle that immediately appealed to me. I thought of Paul Nash and his paintings of WW1 battlefields. In those familiar pictures everything too was blasted and shredded. It was brutal but also beautiful. I visited the shores of Lake Gordon many times over this period and came to feel that the power of this place had something to do with the gulf between the underwater world and this new reality; time slowed underwater but now the daylight illuminated and exposed, time sped up. As the water slowly retreated It was an extreme and unusual landscape that was revealed.”

The Curators of History and Art
At The Henry Jones Art Hotel, history and art collide. Hobart’s oldest waterfront warehouses have been thoughtfully reimagined as Australia’s first dedicated art hotel. Located in the Hunter Street precinct, the hotel blends modernity with an industrial past. Decadent elliptical spas bubble underneath rough-sawn timber trusses. Blackwood-lined boardrooms have been refashioned into stately, indulgent suites.
Through the rise and fall of industries, including Sir Henry Jones’ IXL jam empire, the harbour side location has been central to Hobart and its people. Today, the precinct hums with galleries, award-winning restaurants, bars and cafes. Hotel views capture the bustling port with kunanyi/Mount Wellington beyond.
Warm and engaging service from our curators of history and art is a hallmark of this sophisticated boutique hotel, from complimentary valet parking through to a warm Tasmanian farewell. Attention to every guest is unique – much like the 500 contemporary Tasmanian artworks lining the hotel walls.
Henry Jones represents a fusion of old and new, art and design, indulgence and discovery.
