QOW260 - ”A man who has attained mastery of an art reveals it in his every action.” -山口 剛玄 Gōgen Yamaguchi, Kaiso (Founder of Goju-kai (IKGA/JKGA)
Gogen Yamaguchi Hanshi, a towering figure in the world of karate and the founder of Goju-kai, offers a profound insight into what it means to truly master an art: “A man who has attained mastery of an art reveals it in his every action.” Let's delve into this idea and see how it applies not just to karate but to how we carry ourselves in everyday life.
Imagine watching someone who has spent years, perhaps decades, perfecting their craft in karate. This isn't just about their skill during a match or how they perform a kata; it's about how their training shapes every aspect of their behavior. Mastery in karate—or any martial art, for that matter—transcends the dojo. It influences how a person moves, reacts, and even thinks.
Yamaguchi-sensei's words remind us that mastery isn't confined to technical skill alone. It's about how the discipline, control, and awareness learned through martial arts become integrated into the fabric of one’s being. For a master, every movement, whether in training or in the simplicity of daily tasks, carries a grace and intentionality that speaks volumes about their dedication and understanding of their art.
This concept isn't just limited to physical actions; it extends to how a master interacts with others, handles stress, and approaches challenges. The calmness, patience, and deliberate movements of a true karate master often reflect a deeper inner strength and balance. These are qualities honed over years of rigorous training, meditation, and reflection—qualities that are visible even in the smallest gestures.
In essence, Yamaguchi-sensei is highlighting a beautiful truth about the journey to mastery. It's not just about achieving a high rank or winning competitions; it’s about how the art molds your character and influences your approach to life. A true master lives their art in every moment, showing that the deepest lessons of karate are not just about how to fight, but about how to live.

With winter upon us, the club has reached out to a supplier for jackets that are embroidered with the Goju-Kai Karate logo. These jackets are perfect to wear over students’ karate gi’s both to and from training all year round, especially during winter. We have prepared a few sample jackets (see above) and we also have a sample available at the dojo.
These jackets are available in a variety of sizes at cost of $50. In order to get this price, the club has been asked to put in a bulk order with the supplier.
If you want to order a jacket, we ask that you place an order by email or let one of the instructors / assistant instructors know before the 15th July. Once the order is placed with the supplier, we expect the jackets to be supplied within 2 weeks.
Happy birthday Shihan

One week to go until gradings for p*e wees and juniors.

Nothing beats experience!
