Uterine fibroids represent the most common pelvic tumours among women of reproductive age, affecting more than 70% to 80% of women before the age of 50 worldwide. They are the primary indication for hysterectomy and a major source of gynaecologic and reproductive dysfunction. ​​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​​Although benign, uterine fibroids are associated with significant suffering and side effects. To date, no long-term or non-invasive conventional treatment option exists for hormone-dependent fibroids due to the limited knowledge about the mechanisms underlying their initiation and development.

An effective naturopathic treatment plan can result in an overall reduction in symptoms and a reduction in growth of the fibroids. For some women this may be enough to reduce the need for pharmaceutical or surgical intervention.

St Mary’s Thistle (also know as Milk thistle) is my favourite liver herb.

I frequently prescribe this wonderful herb to clients who have fatty liver, a heavy toxic load from medications, or previous liver damage.

Did you know that St Mary’s thistle can regenerate and repair damaged hepatocytes (liver cells)? Pretty amazing!

I always keep the glycetract in my clinic to give to clients who can’t tolerate alcohol. 🌿😊

Many conventional drugs damage the liver. Silymarin, the concentrated extract from milk thistle seeds (St Mary’s thistle, Silybum marianum) has been proven to protect the liver against toxic effects.

Several experimental studies have shown the protective effect of silymarin against anti-tuberculosis drug-induced hepatotoxicity (ATDH). Hence, scientists in Iran conducted a randomised controlled clinical trial in new cases of tuberculosis (TB). Patients were enrolled to receive either silymarin 150 mg twice daily for two weeks along with a standard anti-TB therapeutic regimen (experimental group; n = 16) or standard anti-TB therapeutic regimen alone (control group; n = 21). Liver function tests (serum AST, ALT, ALP, and total bilirubin) at the end of weeks 1 and 2 as well as the rate of ATDH during the study were determined and compared between the groups.

No significant differences between the herbal and control groups were observed at the end of the first week regarding liver function tests. However, by the end of the second week, the mean serum levels of AST (P = 0.03) and ALP (P = 0.04) were significantly lower in the herbal group. By the second week ALT, AST and ALP had actually decreased in the herbal group, while they were elevated from baseline in the control group. Two patients in the control group (9.5%) developed ATDH, while no one in the herbal group manifested this adverse effect.

Love pumpkin soup!

Pumpkin Soup 🥣

Ingredients:
- 1kg of butternut pumpkin (skin removed and diced)
- 1 large potato (peeled and diced)
- 1 brown onion (finely diced)
- 1 leek finely sliced (white part only)
- 3 cloves of garlic crushed
- 1 cup of chicken or vegetable stock

Method:
1. Heat a deep pot over a medium-high heat, add ½ tablespoon of rice bran oil (or oil of your choice) with the diced onion and sliced leek.
2. Cook until onion is slightly translucent then stir in garlic and cook for another minute. Add pumpkin, potato and stock and bring to boil.
3. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer with lid on for 20-30 minutes stirring occasionally to ensure the vegetables are evenly cooking.
4. Check that the pumpkin and potato is soft and well-cooked before removing from heat and let stand for 10 minutes to slightly cool.
5. Use a stick blender or jug blender to blend in batches until soup is thick and smooth. Return to pot and heat slowly until ready to serve.
6. Serve with a dash of pouring cream or on its own.
