East Lismore Community Preschool
Community Non-Profit Preschool for children aged 3-5 years.
Today our new logo story telling has begun with the amazing SJ, Josh and Louise. The children were first to use their creative skills, imagination and playfulness to start the design process.
Next it’s the teams turn to play and then SJH Kreations will turn all of our experiences into something we might just have to vote on……..Watch this space.
Next Tuesday, 4th June, at 6pm is our AGM at the Preschool.
We really need your help; without you, the parents and grandparents of our children, our Preschool cannot run.
As a not-for-profit origination we have a Board just like any other. People often feel they don't know if they have time or knowledge to join, but you never know if you never try.

Sometimes it’s about using what you have, in as many different ways as you can.
We’ve never spent so little and yet been so diverse and rich.
We are looking for someone to come and help out in term 3. Sonya is going on a long deserved holiday after seeing us through the flood and get us ready to start building.
If you would like to work with an extraordinary team who love to play, learn and think then this is for you.
It was a normal sunny day at the beautiful East Lismore Community Preschool, when Matthew arrived to talk about photocopiers.
Who would have thought that this could lead to donation of $3000 to our building project. A local company, run by local families who had local stories of their own to shared.
A very big thank you to Matthew Wunsch and his partners.

The NSW Early Childhood Education are collaborating with us to find solutions on how to fund the large gap between our grant the building price.
We are looking forward to updating you with good news and a start date on the new building with BENNETTS.
Please keep sharing our appeal.
A huge thank you to those who have donated to our rebuilding appeal already, please keep our post going so we can get as much help as possible.
The children of East Lismore Community Preschool need your help!
We need your donations to help us build the preschool’s forever home.
Despite NSW Early Childhood Education funding, we don’t have enough to proceed with the build because of rising material costs between the funding application and the project start. We have therefore decided to appeal to our community for donations.
We have chosen local company Bennett Constructions to do the build, because they have been in this community even longer than we have. We know their stellar reputation.
But the only way to get the preschool rebuilt and give us our forever home, is with your donations or contacts of people who may also be able to help.
As you probably know East Lismore Preschool has been operating out of temporary premises on the school grounds since the floods.
But the only way to get the preschool rebuilt and give it its forever home, is with donations. Sonya said “Like so many, even with insurance the rebuilding was such a bigger cost that could never have been foreseen. Now we can make sure we are never impacted again. We know there have been lots of appeals in the community, but we will literally not be able to proceed unless we get much needed funds. Bennetts are working hard with us trying to find ways we reduce costs in any way we can, they’ve been fantastic to work with. With your help Bennetts can start work.”

For our currently enrolled family we have an info session tomorrow night.
On Tuesday the 26th March at the Preschool from 6 pm to 7 pm our Occupational Therapist- Tegan and Speech Pathologist Bell will be doing a 15-minute presentation each, on what they do, how they can help, what questions you may or may not have thought about for your child and if we can help in any way.
We have chosen to use our funds to have them at the Preschool as we know families are waiting years to get access for screening and assessments, which is vital to the transition to Kindy and connection to the community.
It will be followed by a Q&A session, supported by Bec and me. We will have referral forms ready to go and set times if you wish to access the them.
We hope to see you there, any questions feel free to message.

Media Release
East Lismore Community Preschool
DA approved for new East Lismore preschool, new build to start next year.
The process of planning for the rebuild of the beloved East Lismore Preschool has been long and arduous but the beginning of the end is now in sight.
Lismore City Council has now approved the preschool’s Development Application, and the building of the new preschool will begin in early March next year. The build itself will be an 8-to-10 month process – and the preschool is hoping to be able to be operating in the new building by Term 2, 2025.
Preschool Director, Sonya McPherson, said “We would like to thank everyone in the community who have helped us get to this stage including the Council, the NSW Government who have provided the funding for the new building, and Thomson Adsett Architects the designers of the new building – and of course all our families and children and all of our staff and management committee. If it takes a village to raise a child, it has taken a community to rebuild a preschool.“
We successfully applied to the NSW Department of Early Education under the Crisis Fund for the new building and were awarded $5.2 million dollars. Council approved the Development Application in just over 4 months.
The new Preschool will be built 3.3 metres above the flood level after the CSIRO issued advice to build 1 metre higher than the highest flood. The new building, designed after extensive community consultation, has been designed around the trees that the preschool has nurtured over the last 20 years. This is important because the preschool is next to a koala corridor. The landscape design will include mostly local, native and food tucker-based plants. The DA included traffic plans and acoustic plans to ensure neighbourhood amenity.
Sonya McPherson said “We believe the new preschool will be a wonderful building that will enable all the future children in the community to receive the same quality of education and care as the previous generations have, with the additional security of knowledge that the building will withstand future floods.”
Ms McPherson also said “Finding ourselves in the position of having to be designers, and project managers of a new build, is not easy. I am a preschool director who has to do this work on top of my usual extensive duties in this role. We appreciate the community’s and the media’s interest in where we are up to with the new build but are unable to provide further information to the media at this stage. Those that are interested can follow our preschool page for updates along the way. “
It is with great excitement that I can share we have been successful in our Developmental application which has been approved by Lismore City Council.
We will be putting shovels in the ground in the first week of March.
This is an eight- to ten-month build and so we are working hard to be back in our new home for Term 2 2025.
We thank you all so much for the support, understanding and collaboration in helping us adapt and manage in the space that we currently call home.

Every year on 26 May, National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’.
National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While this date carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is also commemorated by Australians right around the country.
East Lismore Community Preschool stands with you on this day, to hold the truth-telling and to keep creating a strong future, together.
