JOIN THE TEAM - Bicultural Work Rights Ambassador
The Migrant Workers Centre is recruiting leaders of migrant communities in Victoria to become Bicultural Work Rights Ambassadors.
People born overseas and working in Australia are disproportionately likely to face exploitation at work due to factors such as a lack of familiarity with Australian workplace laws, language barriers and prohibitive visa conditions.
The program employs and trains active and trusted members of Victorian migrant communities to become Bicultural Work Rights Ambassadors, who are supported to deliver information sessions to their peers on workplace rights, occupational health and safety, and how to access culturally and linguistically appropriate support services.

Special thanks to Multicultural Australia, City of Melbourne and cohealth.
The final results of the 'Refuge and Family Futures in Australia' research project was launched recently by AMES Australia CEO, Cath Scarth and local federal MP Maria Vamvakinou.
The project carried out by the University of Technology Sydney in partnership with AMES Australia showed that overwhelmingly, settlement outcomes for the refugee families from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan in Australia were positive.
The study found that after three years 55 per cent of refugees looking for work had secured employment. Over the same period, two in three adults from Syria and half of the Iraqis reported that they spoke English either well or very well.

Australia farewelled one of its greatest champions of multiculturalism today. The life of Ukrainian community leader and former Victorian Multicultural Commission Chair Stefan Romaniw was celebrated in state funeral in Melbourne today.
Stefan was tireless advocate for multiculturalism in Victoria and for his own Ukrainian community.
He worked closely with AMES Australia to support Ukrainian refugees arriving in Melbourne in the wake of the Russian invasion of their homeland. He was a great friend of AMES and will be greatly missed. Vale Stefan.
Our flags are at half-mast in remembrance of Stefan Romaniw OAM whose State Funeral Service is being held today: www.vic.gov.au/StefanRomaniw
Mr Romaniw was a fierce champion of multiculturalism and diversity in Victoria, and he firmly believed that our differences can only enrich us all for the better.
He was a tireless advocate who used the power of his revered voice to fight for others, a voice he often used to speak out against the war in Ukraine. He made it his lifeโs work to preserve Ukrainian culture and identity, both in Australia and abroad.
Mr Romaniw served our state as the Executive Director of Community Languages Australia and previously as the Chair of the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Multicultural Arts Victoria.

AMES Australia has proudly partnered with the Barton United Football Club to promote the participation of young people in sports and community activations.
Barton United FC based in Cranbourne, Victoria is a family oriented club with teams of all ages including women's teams and senior men's teams. It has evolved into a vibrant, multicultural, local sporting club open to all. The clubs does important work towards the inclusion of multicultural young people into sport activations. They also helped AMES Australia during the 2021 mass arrival of refugees from Afghanistan.
We are proud of the work Barton does and we see our vision of "full participation for all in a cohesive and diverse society.โ embodied in the work they do to support migrants and refugees. We are committed to work with grassroot organisations and support initiatives aimed at the inclusion of new arrivals in the Australian communities.
AMES Australia recently commissioned a paper that runs the numbers on what a scheme to better harness the talents of migrant and refugees would look like.
The paper, produced by Dr Ian Pringle, found utilising the skills and experience migrants and refugees bring with them could benefit Australiaโs economy by as much as $10 billion over five years.
It found supporting new arrivals to re-establish their professional careers in Australia could generate more than $2.5 billion in extra tax receipts as well as an extra $8 billion in earnings circulating in the economy over five years.

Refugee Week 2024 has kicked off this week. It is Australiaโs peak annual activity to promote awareness of refugees, the issues they face and the contributions refugees are making to the Australian society.
This year's theme "Finding Freedom: Family" comes as at a time when forced displacement has soared drastically over the last few years around the world. The UNHCR states over 120 million people have been forcibly displaced, out of which 43 million are refugees.
Australia as one of the world's active refugee host nations has housed thousands of refugees over the last few years that come from countries around the world and now call Australia home.
It is important that we reflect on the challenges refugees face in Australia and around the world while cherishing the important contributions they make to the stable growth of the Australian communities and economy.
