Reuniting a museum from the other side of the world with one of their long-lost items was something we weren’t expecting after publishing a video about a rare book back in 2021. 📔
After getting in touch with us with plenty of paperwork, we discovered that the 200-year-old book previously belonging to palaeontologist Mary Anning within our collection was the exact one that went missing from the Lyme Regis Museum in the mid-20th century. Truly serendipitous! ✨

Often cited as the originator of the heliocentric model of the solar system, Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus proposed that the Sun was at the centre of our solar system and that all planets revolved around it ☀️
He wasn’t the first to have that idea though. Greek astronomer Aristarchus believed the Earth rotated on its axis and orbited around the sun, but like Copernicus, his idea wasn’t widely accepted. 👎

Researchers have discovered 24 dinosaur tracks on Boonwurrung Country on the Bass Coast of Victoria, dating back to the Early Cretaceous when Australia was still connected to Antarctica. 😮
Dr Anthony Martin, a geologist and palaeontologist from Emory University spearheaded the international team of researchers including Dr Thomas Rich, senior curator of vertebrate palaeontology here at Museums Victoria Research Institute, and Dr Patricia Vickers-Rich, Professor Emerita of palaeontology at Monash University.
This discovery, published today in the Alcheringa: An Australasian Journal of Palaeontology, indicates that large theropod dinosaurs thrived in this polar environment, prowling the river floodplains when the ice thawed during the summers.

A career full of scientific accomplishments, today we’re looking back on the extraordinary life of Museums Victoria alumni Fay Murray. 🏆
After graduating from the University of Melbourne with Bachelor and Master of Science degrees, Fay worked as a demonstrator at the university before working as a librarian at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
Her interest in molluscs was how she discovered her enthusiasm for photography, documenting specimens on field trips, and what led her to joining the Malacological Society of Australasia the year it was formed.
This fascination with molluscs became the basis of a constructive relationship with Museums Victoria (known then as the National Museum of Victoria) Curator of Molluscs Hope Black nee Macpherson, culminating in them being Honorary Associates together at the Museum. 🔬
