February meeting: St Helena in the south Atlantic
Please note that due to prior bookings at Greenhills Neighbourhood House, we have changed the day and date of our upcoming February and March meetings:
NEW TIMES:
February: now Friday 23 Feb at 1.15pm
Our presenter will be GHS Secretary Peter Van Eeken. Peter's topic is St Helena
Our local suburb of St Helena is named after St. Helena Island in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most remote islands in the world and was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese enroute to India in 1502. For about four centuries, the island was an important stopover for ships from Europe to Asia and back, while sailing around the African continent, until the opening of the Suez Canal. St Helena is the United Kingdom’s second-oldest overseas territory (after Bermuda).
Peter Van Eeken will present a History of the Island in order to gain some appreciation of our local suburb’s sources and its forebears. Anthony Beale, one of Greensborough’s earliest pioneers, named his cattle run ‘St Helena’ after the island on which he once lived..
March: now Saturday 23 March at 1,15pm
All dates for meetings for the remainder of the year will be as published.

Dear members, Greensborough Historical Society (GHS) has a request for any descendants of the Angland family to make contact with us. This is in regards of some damage to an Angland grave in the Greensborough cemetery. In order for an insurance claim to be paid to restore the grave, a descendant needs to apply. GHS has been approached by Banyule Council to assist in this matter.
Join us for our August meeting on Saturday 26 August 2023 at Greenhills Neighbourhood House, Community Drive Greensborough, commencing at 1.15pm.
Our presenter will be GHS member Phil Taig on the topic of Early Victorian Gold and the town of Clunes. 'Victoria's First Payable Gold' covers events that not only reversed the flow of Melbourne's population to the Bathurst goldfields but made the new state of Victoria the richest colony in the world.
Following Phil’s talk, join us for afternoon tea and a chat.
All members and friends are welcome.

Dear members, we have a need for some combined thinking. Who remembers the Greensborough Districts Cricket Club which was formed in1949?
I know there are at least couple of former members here. Russell Townsend is seeking any former members or information on GDCC. The club was based at Partington's Flat and shared the building in the summer with the hockey club who played in the winter.
Regrettably the club closed in 1989. Eric Barclay was a President and many local identities supported with fund raising. Gavin Taylor and Jeff Connell will remember those days.
Any information on past members or photos of memorabilia are sought. GHS will assist in preserving this memory as well. Many of the players went to 2062.
Dear Members and Friends, it is my sad duty to inform you of the passing away of long time GHS member Mrs Truus de Man on 20th April 2023.
Truus was married to John and had four sons namely; Henry, Roland(dec), Lex and Paul. The family lived on the corner of Vermont Parade and Adeline Street.
It was my pleasure to know Truus from 1960 when I attended Ester St kindergarten and met Roland.
Truus was well known for her work at Deloraine Nursing Home and Diamond Valley Community Hospital.
Her son Henry informed me that she passed away peacefully and that the funeral will be next week. Details will be advertised.
Condolences are extended to her sons and their families at this sad time.
UPDATE: CHANGE OF VENUE
Join us for our next meeting on Friday 31 March 2023 at Diamond Valley Library Community Room
Our topic for the March meeting is the history of our local library service. Yarra Plenty Regional Library provides public library service for the municipalities of Banyule, Nillumbik and Whittlesea. It is considered an innovative and leading public library service. This presentation will look at the origins of the library service, where it has come from, the service today and where it might be in the future.
Our guest speaker will be Liz Pidgeon. Liz is the Local and Family History Librarian for Yarra Plenty Regional Library where she leads and manages the delivery of local and family history services. She is passionate about the importance of preserving family and local history, telling our stories, and the role public libraries and community groups play in helping individuals connect to their past.
Following Liz's presentation, please join us for a long afternoon tea and a chat among friends.
UPDATE: due to a 'flood' at Greenhills, we have moved our meeting to Diamond Valley Library for this month.
Due to the change, we will start our meeting a little later to allow members to arrive. Approx start time 1.30pm
Here at Greensborough Historical Society we are looking forward to accessing our History Resource Centre once again in 2023. It's been a long 2022 with minimal social interaction but we know the renovations will be worth it. The Committee had a look this week and tidied up the garden. There is still some internal work to be done but we have been told this will be completed in January.
Please check our website for updates and a calendar of upcoming events for 2023.
Happy New Year everyone.
Dear
Members and Friends
This is a story about our Honourary member Atis Lejiņš who is retiring from Latvian politics at the age of 80. Atis spent some of his youth living on what is now Poulter Reserve and attended 2062 in the 1940's.
As kids growing up in Poulter Ave we referred to the hill running down from the railway carpark area as "Lejins Hill".
Atis is in centre rear.

Due to the wet weather, the walk around Poulter Reserve and area has been postponed until a date to be advised in 2023.
Tomorrow, instead of the walk, our meeting will be held at Greenhills Neighbourhood House, Community Drive. GHS President Norm Colvin will present his always popular "Down Memory Lane" - a look at Greensborough and surrounding areas from past to present.
All Welcome. Afternoon tea will be served after Norm's presentation.
Nillumbik Shire Council are holding a ceremony to plant a mature tree to honour our late Queen Elizabeth II. and celebrate her 70 years of service.
GHS need some help. Do any of our readers know information about "Chook Farms" that used to be in the area? In particular those situated in the Grace Park area.
We are currently researching the Green Bros farm that was near the Plenty river end of Elder St. In 1930 they had about 5000 chooks producing 10000 per week. Any information or scans of old photos would be appreciated.
The sheds are on the bottom right of the picture.
