**Government Further Tightens Student Visa Applications to Stop 'Visa Hopping'**

Even more changes are being made to the rights of those already in Australia.

The Australian government is making it more difficult for foreign citizens to carry out what it calls "visa hopping".

As of 1 July, the government will close two pathways it says are being used to “subvert” offshore student integrity measures.

and holders will no longer be able to apply for onshore.

A statement from the minister's office said, “The visitor to student pathway has become increasingly prevalent, with over 36,000 applications since 1 July 2023 to the end of May 2024.”

“This measure closes a pathway that has been used to attempt to subvert the Government’s strengthened offshore student visa integrity measures,” it stated.

The Department of Home Affairs is streamlining Australia's visa systems and process leading to big reductions in average visa processing times across a number of categories.

✅ Student visas – within 16 days
✅ Temporary Skilled Shortage 482 visas – within 21 days
✅ Employer Sponsored Skilled program: healthcare and education – within one day
✅ Working Holiday visa (outside of Australia) – within one day

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus announced yesterday that the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) would be abolished, to be replaced with "an administrative review body that serves the interests of the Australian community".

The Australian Government has announced that the AAT will be abolished and replaced with a new federal administrative review body. The AAT will continue operating until the new federal administrative review body is established. Once the new body is established, any remaining cases will transition to the new body.

Additional members of the AAT

The Government will be appointing additional members to the AAT to address the current backlog of cases.
