As of late last night, the lovely and wonderful Pandora, who loves the Frankston van, texted the boss to say that she wanted to come back from leave early, to get the van out today and tomorrow!

So, if you’re on the countdown for our Cripps Family Fish & Chips - Oliver’s Hill, get down and see Pandora all weekend 🥰 She will have the van running like it never left! She is a gem who is so excited to be back at Oliver’s Hill.

Pandora loves working the van and has her regulars she loves seeing, so wants to get back today and see you all!

We love you Pandora, thank you for all of your hard work.

The entire Cripps team 😍

Some great news 😍😍

Frankston City Council today announced Olivers Hill Boat Ramp will now be home to three unique mobile food and beverage operators– Mercetta, Little Olly’s and Cripps Fish & Chips.

This decision follows a highly engaging and collaborative meeting with all three operators, the CEO and Mayor of Frankston City Council, who have all committed to working together to bring an expanded offering to our community.

Mercetta, the successful applicant of the recent Expression of Interest process, is fully supportive of this initiative.

Frankston Council has also confirmed no boat parking will be lost as part of these changes.

Cripps Fish & Chips will return on site Wednesday 12th October, Little Olly’s will remain in their current spot Mercetta will commence by December.

Mercetta, Little Olly’s, Cripps Fish & Chips and Frankston City Council thank the community for their enthusiasm, great interest and patience while we worked through the issues this week.

The owner wanted to give everyone some clarification around some of the questions we had yesterday. Grab a cuppa, and have a read 😊😢
........
After an overwhelming response and the support yesterday, I wanted to reach out and thank everyone for their patronage over the last 3 years.

Thankyou so very much.

We wanted to also put the facts out there as how things have come about for the ratepayers of Frankston.

3 years ago we submitted a tender to Frankston council through a plan to activate a few areas around Frankston.

To my knowledge and according to the council representative (whom I will withhold their name at this stage) told me that us and Little Ollie’s were the only applicants. Council offered me the position and suggested the area which we occupied, and we called it home for 3 years. Council and us entered into a lease which would end September 30 2022.

I chose and pushed for that spot because it would be stunning and like no where else in Melbourne.

Council representatives at that meeting indicated that they would get power and asphalt to the site, which never happened! They considered the $26,000 dollars they where quoted to run power across the car park as too much so we offered to pay for it, if I could get an extension to my lease.

I began operating the site in November 3 years ago. As anyone knows, it takes a good 2 years to establish any business. This isn’t any business, there’s been a lot more challenges. It has taken a number of years to build the team and we have built an incredible team!

It’s a hard business to operate and very challenging picking up and dropping off the van everyday. We have weather challenges as well as managing the risks…. we encountered plenty of challenges.

2 months ago I was asked by Frankston council to tender for the site through a new program. During the tender process, I learnt that our existing site wasn’t part of the new tender. Council indicated that DELP (department of land and environmental )wasn’t in favour. I have since found out that wasn’t the case through my own discussions with DELP.

I was determined to understand the reason why that existing site wasn’t being offered. I also had a discussion with boating Victoria to see if they could assist and they meet with council to understand what they could do. Unfortunately, when we were met with an attitude with no interest to facilitate any outcome.

At a minimum the process has been very poorly conducted by council. Very minimal consultation by council. Actually none.

As of 3pm yesterday, the last day of our lease, we were notified that we were unsuccessful in the recent tender process. No notice for my team, no sorry, just that’s it. Under the terms of tender, we were supposed to be notified 2 weeks ago. I wonder what was going on in that 2 weeks?

The information that council requested was a lot and was 2 weeks of collating and formatting a number of plans and requirements under the tender process. Time I’ll never get back.

At this point I like to take you back to the original tender which was very informal and consultative and open. And 2 applicants us and Ollies. 2 applicants!

Guess what? After 3 years of building the business and team and staff and customer base and trust in the community, we now aren’t good enough for those council officers who run this shameful process.

So with a very heavy heart, after a very sleepless last few days and no sleep last night….and after a month of trying to get to the bottom of what was the truth and what was not and being very disheartened and to be lied to and deceived, as I feel I have been.

I feel gutted for my team! They have put in long days cleaning the van at 7am each day, emptying waste tanks, filling fuel, oil and gas and re stocking the van each and every day and providing maintenance on a moveable restaurant on wheels. The challenges of navigating on to the site without incident. Serving an incredible amount of meals with out incident. Managing a business through covid and staff.
As you can see from all the comments, we delivered a product that our customers loved 🥰. From a great team who knew our regulars by name.

I am having a very hard time understanding how council representatives employed at council, whom have no real understanding of operating a business, have made this decision. The challenges of a food truck that was required to be picked up and dropped off everyday, which I did everyday for 18 months, on my own, no holidays and missed plenty of my kids activities. No day off, until I could afford the team….which no longer have jobs, as of today 😢

So as the first day we are not there and after a sleepless night filled with immense frustration….I simply don’t understand how or why?

The only tenders, from 3 years ago who built it and did the hard yards…..got a simple email “you have been unsuccessful we have decided to go with a new operator”!

Why…is it because people are of the view that we made a lot and killed it?! Let me tell you….the cost in maintenance and a maintenance guy to maintain the van and generators 7 days a week, battling rising cost in fish and chips and oil, although we held our price for last 2 years.

Is there any logic in this world? Certainly not at council… and I am sure the deciding officers at council didn’t read the post of how good the product was or does that not count or the fact that we started it and built it and drove it.

I am at a complete loss…I don’t understand….I am heartbroken and gutted 😢😢

29/09/2022

A heartfelt note from the owner…💔😢

I grew up in a fishing family, fishing corner inlet as a young boy with poppy Cripps, who you see on the van, who I loved and harassed to take me fishing. I enjoyed pulling in nets listening to pop whinge about the weather. I often made him go out fishing on days he wouldn’t want to.

Fishing and the ocean run through my body, I’m most at rest on the water.

In recent days, and particularly today, has been incredibly difficult. I have thoroughly enjoyed the ride that had been Cripps Family Fish & Chips - Oliver’s Hill and I won’t stop pursuing council and those that put an end to it. Creating a place as nice as our little patch of dirt on the Frankston foreshore where people could lose themselves for a moment whilst enjoying Fish and Chips, reflecting on whatever they need to….including me many times in the last 3 years.

Cripps Oliver’s Hill has been a happy place for me as the owner. I am very sad to nonsense bureaucratic BS that has got in the road of something that was good! We did what the council wanted, to activate the area.

I think Ross (poppy) Cripps wouldn’t have understood it and shaken his head, as I am. He would be extremely proud of myself and the team, just as I am. And my cousin Jason who took 10,000 photos of poppy fishing who captured those moments. Jason sadly took his life a long time ago. But to me, capturing Jason’s pics on my vans and sharing it means the world beside the bay, as people enjoy the Cripps fish and chips.

I really hope we do find a way to get back here and feel free to write to local council members and question the Frankston council who proclaim to support local business !!!

Thankyou to all of our wonderful customers over the past 3 years and the team, a special mention to Dale who cooks fish and chips like no one else can! Pandora and her incredible customer service, grumpy John who in the last 12 months has towed the van down and sets it up, and lastly to Matt who keeps the vans working and maintained.

Thankyou so much

It’s a very sad day for me, our spot started from my idea. Life is a journey please follow us to see where we go.

H.
