GOOD 👍 OR BAD 👎 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you’re one of those people who proudly proclaims of having sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, yakult and kombucha in your diet then this post is for you!

In summary, fermented foods can assist with increasing beneficial bacteria in your gut. HOWEVER, if you do have Candida or other pathogens and a lot of inflammation then you could be causing more damage.

During the fermenting process yeast, sugars and alcohol are made which can throw more flame to the fire and instead of supporting digestion your left with a lot of gas and bloating. 🙈

In the fermenting process, the foods also produce histamine which is a chemical released by the immune system during states of inflammation or when it’s allergic to something.

ALSO!!! Always check your ingredients labels! Just because a product has amazing marketing behind it, doesn’t mean it’s always good for you.

LIVER DETOX- TO DO or NOT TO DO 🤷🏻‍♀️

About this time of year, now that summer and the holiday period is over, I get lots of questions about clients wanting to do a liver detox.

The types of methods referred to are often quite extreme such as a ‘vegetable juice diet’, celery juicing, cauliflower soup, or a ‘salad only’ diet.

While I think it’s commendable that anyone can stick to having only juice for 7 days (because I certainly couldn’t) , it’s absolutely unnecessary for a liver cleanse.

For a simple and more sustainable approach….

👉🏻 Remove foods that are deep fried, processed and packaged.
👉🏻 Eliminate alcohol and soft drinks/ fruit juices.
👉🏻 Have foods that are hunted, gathered, fished and plucked.
👉🏻 Have a minimum of 2 litres of water daily.
👉🏻 Make sure your going to the toilet daily
👉🏻 Have 30 grams of fibre daily and leafy greens and green vegetables.

Some of the herbs and supplements that I love using to facilitate liver clearance and are liver protective and restorative are,

Digging deeper and testing methylation and other epigenetic profiles might also be relevant to supporting your liver.

Recently I received an opportunity to be apart of a medical team that specialises in Complex Trauma PTSD.

Having my own personal experience of having lost both my dad and a sister to mental health, it’s been great for me to be in a position where I am now and be able to give back to this area of health, not just from a professional perspective, but also feeling confident and comfortable to do so.

From a professional perspective, I’ve seen the amazing results of both western and natural medicine working together integratively to get the best outcome for the client, even as far as ceasing their prescribed medication and using dietary and lifestyle measures while trusting in my clinical knowledge and supporting them with herbal and supplement alternatives for their symptoms.

While there is obvious causation for the mental health diagnosis for the group of people mentioned above, I also see a growing amount of clients seeking support for depression, anxiety and ADHD.

Some health imbalances to be aware of that can contribute similar symptoms of depression and anxiety and should be investigated can be,

Last year I went out of my comfort zone of strength training and did my first ever Adventure Race in the
X-Marathon Series, held in East Gippsland.

The course was approx 100 km, had to be completed within 24 hours and it was all navigation based. 🗺️🧭

We carried our own food and water in our backpacks and in true Victoria form it poured rain the whole 24 hours, which meant we had to keep moving otherwise we’d start shaking. 🥶🥶

Our team completed the course in 19 hours and these are the disciplines we covered: 🚴‍♀️🚣‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Leg 1: 10km trek
Leg 2: 25km kayak
Leg 3: 30 km MTB
Leg 4: 8km trek
Leg 5: 15 km MTB
Leg 6: 10 km kayak

Training for this race is when I learned what cardiovascular fitness was really about and how much having the right nutrition, meant you were either fuelled or you were going to fail.

I had to change my training and nutrition from what I knew currently worked for my body and try something totally new because my goals and what I was working towards had changed. It wasn’t very convenient most of the times but I had committed to a team and doing the race.

Life goes in phases. Sometimes we’re happy just floating and feeling mostly good and that’s okay BUT if you have a specific goal you want to achieve, you have to be prepared to make the changes and put in specific actions to get the desired result.

It all comes down to what you want!

👉🏻 The winning team finished the race in 15 hours!!There are some crazy, fit people out there.

👉🏻 I had a blast and would absolutely do it again when the time is right.

👉🏻 One day I’d love to do a 5 day expedition race 🤗

The Basics of Blood Testing 🔬🩸💉

It’s not just a test – it’s an invaluable tool revealing insights into physiology, optimizing health and performance, and ruling out assumptions.

In short, it eliminates guesswork! 🎯

For myself, as your practitioner, it’s the cornerstone for creating personalized treatment plans and tracking progress effectively. 📈 But what factors influence these results? Let’s have a look:

1️⃣ Food: Fasting before a blood test is important. It helps us understand your body’s longer term function, not just recent intake.

Blood glucose levels, lipids, high protein intake, too many foods with beta carotene and alcohol will all influence your results.

Have your blood test, first thing in the morning, without food or caffeinated drinks, water is fine. 🚫🥞☕️

2️⃣ Fitness: Avoid intense exercise 24-48 hours before testing to prevent temporary fluctuations in certain measurements.

An athletes blood work can look like they’re at cardiovascular risk as their body goes into ‘adaption mode’ to handle the physical stress. Your health shouldn’t scare your doctor! 🏋️‍♀️❌

3️⃣ Females: Hormone levels vary with menstrual cycle phases. Testing on specific days ensures accuracy:

Day 3: Ideal for assessing ovarian function, fertility and women with irregular menstrual cycles.

Hormones assessed, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Lutenzing Hormone (LH), Oestrodial, and Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH).

Day 21: Perfect assessing Progesterone levels, and confirming ovulation.

⚠️ Note: Contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can alter hormone levels. For a deeper look, consider the DUTCH test for hormone metabolite analysis.

FAT BURNERS:

I don’t like pre formulated fat burners and pre workouts because of the high caffeine intake.

The average cup of coffee contains 60 mg of caffeine and most pre workouts/ fat burners contain 300 mg of caffeine.

And do they work?? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Short term you might get an energy hit but it won’t help you lose weight. 😱😱

They cause adrenal insufficiency and dysregulates blood glucose levels which makes you tired and frumpy. 😔😔😔

HOWEVER!!! If you’re looking for some energy before the gym this is a great stack!! 💪💪💪

👉🏻 L Carnitine ( transports fats into the mitochondria of the cells and uses it as ATP aka ENERGY!! )

👉🏻 L Tyrosine ( enhances adrenaline and dopamine. DO NOT take for an evening workout)

👉🏻 Myo Inositol ( increases insulin sensitivity and boosts serotonin)

👉🏻 Choline ( metabolises cholesterol and fat, brain booster and liver protective)

You can mix these together and it’s totally safe!

AND WE’RE BACK!!!

Well we’ve been back for a while now but keeping a low profile on social media while school holidays were on.

Despite the juggle I do love school holidays and having the freedom to do different activities with my 2 boys that we can’t fit in with our normal schedule.

But NOW… it’s back to school, back to routine and let’s GET TO WORK!! The first month of 2024 is already gone, can you believe it! 😱😱

What I have found in working with clients, is that we may have all the information and knowledge that we need, but when it comes to APPLICATION and DOING, we need that accountability person and someone to structure it with a plan thats direct and concise and integrates with our individual lifestyle and personal values so that it can work for us.

Because what’s important to me is going to be different for you!! And that’s what individual health is all about.

Embracing Challenges

I recently enrolled in a motorbike course that took an unexpected twist! 🤯 Just a week before the course, I fractured my elbow, and the no-refund, no-rescheduling policy was staring me in the face. 💸💔

After careful consideration and assessing the risks involved, I decided to take the risk and attend the course. 🚀 🏍️. When I arrived, I realized it was much more advanced than what I thought it was AND it was on the racetrack AND I had to get on the racetrack! 😱

My anxiety levels went through the roof! 😬 I couldn't even remember how to start my bike! 🙈

Fast forward to the end of the day, and there I was zooming around the racetrack (maybe not as fast as the others) and thrilled with my progress! 😄🏁. I finished the course with more confidence, skills and without further harm to my elbow. 🙌.

When life throws you curveballs, what do you make them mean? Do you push through the challenges or take them as a reason to pause or even stop? 🤔

If you stopped, would you be happy that you never achieved what you wanted? If you paused, is there ever a perfect time to start again or is it more about you being ready and taking that first step?
