Today marks a significant milestone for Imran and Dawn. After twelve years of patient waiting, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal has finally granted a favorable decision, clearing the path for their long-awaited reunion with their daughter.
I’m absolutely thrilled for their family and grateful for the role I played in this journey. It’s wins and moments like these that truly make me love what I do.
Today marks International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme centres around inclusion—a concept I’ve contemplated in relation to my work and its impact.
For over two decades, I’ve assisted women globally in finding refuge within Australia. These women, often escaping horrendous circumstances such as violence, persecution, and war, come from realities beyond many of our comprehensions.
I’ve encountered women who’ve lived in refugee camps for years with their children, women fleeing war-torn regions like Afghanistan, Ukraine, Syria, and those escaping persecution just because they are, women... I’m incredibly humbled and grateful to have played a role in integrating them into Australian communities.
Moreover, my reflection extends to international women already here in Australia, yet remain marginalised, trapped in situations of family violence. These women desperately need pathways to secure their stay and emerge from temporary visas that leave them without rights.
Advocating for mechanisms like a family violence visa is something I’ve pushed for, aiming to bring these women out of the shadows, ensuring their safety, and fostering their inclusion within our communities. The implementation of such visas is urgent and necessary.
So, on this International Women’s Day I stand and advocate for and support the inclusion of every woman in our society.

I’m proud to share my latest article on LinkedIn: “Two Decades of Advocacy: The Case for a Dedicated Family Violence Visa in Australia.” Drawing on my twenty-year experience with Australia’s migration system and family violence, I advocate for a specialised visa to aid those trapped in abusive situations.
This piece sheds light on the systemic changes needed to protect and empower temporary visa holders facing family violence.
Please read and share to support this vital cause.

A question I get asked frequently is how many state and territory nominations for the Subclass 190 and 491 visas are left for this financial year?
The reporting by Home Affairs for the end of December 2022 gives some insight and answers that question, which Abul Rizvi reported on 29 January (link to the article in comments).
The state and territory nominations for 2022-23 to the end of December 2022 for Subclass 190 visas are:
* ACT: 411 (with 2,025 allocation places available); [1614 places left]
* NSW: 2,375 (9,108); 6733
* NT: 298 (600); 302
* QLD: 712 (3,000); 2288
* SA: 1,512 (2,700); 1188
* TAS: 931 (2,000); 1069
* VIC: 4,105 (11,500); 7395
* WA 830 (5,350). 4520
The state and territory nominations for 2022-23 to the end of December 2022 for Subclass 491 visas are:
* ACT: 855 (2,025); 1170
* NSW: 871 (6,168); 5297
* NT: 297 (1,400); 1103
* QLD: 472 (2,000); 1528

* TAS: 565 (2,250); 1685
* VIC: 1,082 (3,400); 2318
* WA: 420 (2,790); 2370
As seen from this report, there are plenty of places left. Each state and territory is lagging and will need to speed up considerably to fill the available spots by 30 June.
If you’re interested in submitting a skilled visa application, obtaining state/territory nomination is a surefire way to maximise your chances. Upon successful nomination, Expression of Interest (EOI) applications are immediately selected to apply for skilled visas.
