Did you know that the placenta is essential resuscitation equipment!
Babies are born with their own resuscitation equipment. The placenta not only helps the baby to transition, but assists with resuscitation if needed. There is no reason to clamp and cut the cord of a baby who needs help. Doing so will create more problems for the baby and mother. Anything that needs to be done can be done with back-up from the placenta, and the involvement of the mother.
SHE IS NOT SLEEPING.
.
She has her eyes closed, but she doesn't.
She is feeding her child.
Her arm is in the wrong position, she hurts, but she does not move, because the baby is comfortable like that.
She appears to be sleeping, but she is not.
She's tired, she closes her eyes, but she listens to every breath of her baby.
Even tonight she will spend it like this.
In that position.
Awkward, weird, but like this.
She doesn't move so as not to wake him up.
She would like to fall asleep but she doesn't.
A mother's night is only the other half of the day.

✨The uterus is considered a free floating organ, supported by 14 ligaments, nestled between the bladder & bowels. ✨It has the capacity to shift & move, to grow & shrink not only during pregnancy but also during each & every menstrual cycle. ✨ A non-menstruating uterus weighs about 4oz, but by the end of pregnancy these same ligaments must support an organ that now averages aprox 11lbs ✨The amount of strain incurred on the uterus can be likened to first degree musculoskeletal strain - with a recovery time taking much more than 6 weeks ✨ Healing the uterine ligaments is a primary reason why profound REST is so important during the fourth trimester 🛌 May we all live with strength & vitality & without prolapse ✊🏻
Did you know how good encapsulation is for the maternal cardiovascular system post brith? The placenta is rich in selenium, a mineral with antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage[1] and may be partly why placental ingestion is so effective in aiding uterine recovery. (2)

What do you know about iron and the placenta? Studies show a strong correlation between maternal iron levels and the mother’s experience of depression, stress, and cognitive functioning postpartum. (3,4) Amazingly, a term placenta has an iron equivalent of nearly two blood transfusions. (5)

Claiming homebirth is ‘risky’, while pretending hospital birth is not, completely ignores what we know to be true. The evidence and statistics are clear. Hospital birth carries risks we do not see in homebirth. And homebirth is just as safe, if not more safe for many.
Regardless of where you choose to give birth, no where is risk free. The best place for you to birth is the place YOU feel safe, supported and in control.

Reach for the stars. Aim higher.
Your cervix is not a crystal ball. All it can tell you is what is happening at that exact moment. It can not tell you how far away you are from holding your baby. Stop letting people put there hands up you to check every other minute.
Something many providers aren’t versed on, especially medical and obstetric birth providers; the pelvic floor and internal anatomy! ✨
Once the cervix is 10cm dilated, baby then needs to work through the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the pelvic floor of the vaginal canal. Being 10cm dilated does not mean we should be telling women to start bearing down, in fact, this can be quite harmful.
Coached or encouraged pushing through the vaginal canal and sphincter before the body is ready can cause significant pelvic floor complications for the woman postpartum. One complication being painful in*******se going forward; nobody wants any part of that! 🙅🏼♀️
👉🏼 Your local OB likely won’t tell you that though. They might not even know what you are talking about if you ask! They aren’t taught these things in their training, believe it or not. Medical birth providers will likely be swift to tell you to start pushing at the confirmation of one being 10 centimeters dilated, unknowing of the impact this has on the pelvic floor.
Women should start bearing down when their body leads them to. Once the fetal head (or bum) reaches a certain point in the vaginal canal, the pushing urge will kick in, involuntarily. You can often hear a shift in her vocalization to more of an involuntary grunting noise when this occurs.
We should not be telling women to push because their cervix is dilated; this would be illogical and pose risk to her pelvic floor health. Protect women from multiple postpartum pelvic floor complications by allowing them to begin pushing when their body leads them to.
As I tell all of the women I attend: The birthing woman will always know before the attendant when it is best and safest to begin bearing down!
🗣 If you’ve given birth, were you told when to begin pushing or did you start pushing when your body lead you to?

This is where your baby lives, and grows for 9 (or so) months.
You can see the placenta at the top with the umbilical cord attached, which supply's a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, and taking away waste. You also can see the amniotic sac which is what encapsulates your baby keeping them safe and at a regulated temperature.
It is just incredible to think that not only do you create a human from just two cells but also you grow an entire organ that sustains and enables life in 9 short months.

Did you know that 30% of your babies blood is in their placenta/cord at any given time!!! This is not 'cord' blood, it's baby blood. Blood they need. When we clamp the cord seconds after birth we are depriving the babe of blood that they want and need to thrive. Wait for white.
Normalize Birth to your children.
It’s the most powerful and impactful thing you can do.
In this house, birth is just a normal ordinary thing we do 🤣
The morning I went into labor, I started having surges right before they left for school. My mom drove them down and took Tatum with her so that I could just rest. I didn’t tell anyone right away what I was feeling because I’d had so many false alarms.
But this day they were different. I told my mom to not rush back up here with Tatum because I felt like today was the day and I’d want her to pick the girls up from school again and bring them back to be here.
I was really enjoying the peace and quiet at first so they didn’t come home until lunchtime. We still had hours before little Beckett would make his entrance, but I wanted their presence in the home.
Tatum, a normal typical 2 year old boy started getting tired and a little crazy, and it was a bit much for me, so he took a nap. I’m so grateful I had my mom and sister helping Jono with the kids, keeping them occupied when they were bored and feeding them.
They were watching TV as we entered the evening and I went into transition. I remember telling my family to get the kids over because I was so close, but it was still a little longer than I thought. They went back to watching tv, like it was a non-event until things really shifted and his head was descending.
From them seeing him be born, me pulling him out of the water, to me birthing the placenta in the shower, and them helping to burn the cord, they were there for all of it. Beautiful, messy, bloody, incredible. To them, this is just what you do when you’re having a baby.
And they will grow up without fears or trauma surrounding birth.
If I don’t do anything else right, I know I’ve at least instilled a sense of empowerment in them for when that day comes for them!
And hopefully one day, I’ll get to be part of their day too 🤍

the number 1 factor that should determine decision making in maternity care is what the woman wants. It’s cool if that interplay’s with the clinical picture and what the evidence supports… but in all circumstances, if you as the care provider are wondering what you should do when caring for a woman, always opt with what she wants.
Happy Home Birth Day!
Because home is where the heart is.
Hospitals are for sick people.
Placenta consumption is often associated with reducing bleeding, increasing energy and lowering baby blues... It's science
'At least your baby is alive’ is the most bu****it phrase ever uttered. ‘At least your baby is alive’ suggests that a baby and woman who are alive represent the top rung of the ladder when it comes to birth outcomes.
I’ve got news for you, it’s the BOTTOM one! A live woman and baby is the minimum expectation of maternity care, the bottom rung! Not the top rung!
The ultimate expectation of maternity care is that the woman and her family are completely blissed out and satisfied with their birth experience, they are blown away with joy and elation at what they just did and they feel autonomous and respected. A joyful birth is the standard, a live woman and baby is simply and expectation.
