Today was the final day of the World Down Syndrome Congress 2024. Our final DSV and associated presentations were delivered including reflections on the importance of parent connection and support with Sonia Bonadio (alongside Down Syndrome WA, Celebrate T21, T21 Mum Australia Network - Down Syndrome Parent Support, 21 Gifts), DSV board member Felicia Koh launched a new Prenatal Chromosomal Screening Pathway resource, Dan Payne delivered a presentation on the popular Fiona McBurney Match Day Experience and DSV board member Pieta Manning and her daughter Caitlin reflected on Caitlinโs experience of Type 1 Diabetes.
We also heard from a selection of self-advocates on the things that are important to them, the things that inspire them, and the things that need to change in their lives and our communities plus much, much more.
Tune into the July edition of DNews for more updates and information following congress (you can sign up to DNews here and make sure to select Down Syndrome Vic from the dropdown menu: https://tinyurl.com/dsvdnews).
It was another fantastic day at the World Down Syndrome Congress in Brisbane today with a number of DSV staff presenting. This morning kicked off with a moving memorial for Sir Robert Martin, a disability rights activist and member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We also heard from Charlotte Woodward, a strong self-advocate from the National Down Syndrome Society in the U.S.
There were many other topics covered today from the neuroscience of Down syndrome, dance and creative arts, health and diet, the importance of siblings within family units and of course two of our very own Down Syndrome Victoria presentations: The Evolution of Down Syndrome Victoria's Education Support Service (with Ro O'Dwyer), and Fitskills - an innovative and evidence-based physical activity program for people with Down syndrome (with Matt O'Neil, Brad Cresswell and Dan Payne).
There are more than 1000 delegates from over 45 countries sharing culture, learnings and forming connections at the World Down Syndrome Congress and we look forward to sharing more information, updates and resources both as the event progresses, and in the coming weeks.
Itโs fabulous to have so many Victorian families and some of the DSV team representing our state at the World Down Syndrome Congress in Brisbane this week!

After significant Federal funding cuts and no State disability or health funding, Down Syndrome Victoria CEO Daniel Payne combined his two passions, golf and advocating alongside people with Down syndrome for a better future, to create 'A hole in one for T21' to help bridge the gap. The response and support from the community has been phenomenal, and we extend our deepest gratitude.
We are certain that people would be surprised and dismayed to know that organisations like DSV rely on donations to provide essential supports for people with Down syndrome and families, including providing unbiased information and support to those with a prenatal diagnosis. Whilst this campaign has been a lot of fun, it has also been significant for DSV, both in terms of raising vital funds and highlighting the substantial obstacles faced by Down Syndrome Victoria in the current climate.
People with Down syndrome and their families deserve access to the critical services, supports, resources and information provided by DSV and we hope this campaign takes a step towards ensuring that.
The entire team at DSV were thrilled to tune into Dan on television and radio sharing our message - again! - this morning on Channel 9's Today Show and ABC Radio.

Incredibly grateful for all the support on and off course, and for the funds raised. $16,500 on the fundraising site, and approx $5k raised today on course. Too many people to individually thank, including the volunteers, but please know your support is incredibly appreciated.
For those heading up tomorrow, the $2500 Drummond golf clubs are still up for grabs with many near misses. Shout out to Daniel Clohesy who currently holds the NTP and the Melbourne Racing Club for their generous donation.

Tomorrow is the big day! Our CEO, Dan Payne, is going to try and hit a hole in one, or 3,000 golf balls, whichever comes first, to raise money for DSV and the work we do.
There are lots of different ways to get involved:
โณ Take a guess
With any donation over $50, you'll have the chance to select a ball from 1 to 3,000. Will you choose the elusive 'hole in one' ball and win our grand prize โ a weekend away for six people at Boho Beach House, Lakes Entrance? Even if the hole in one remains unachieved, all ball selectors will be entered into the draw for the same grand prize.
โณ Make a general donation
Make a difference by donating to Dan's effort. Every contribution, no matter the size, fuels our mission and brings us closer to our goals.
โณ Challenge yourself
If you want to have a hit yourself, join us at Woodend Golf Club on Saturday 22 or Sunday 23 June for $10 per shot. Have a go and try your luck at scoring a hole in one. The first person to hit a hole in one will win a Tour Edge Package fitted from Drummond Golf Niddrie, valued at $2,500. Eighteen holes of golf for up to four players at St Andrews Beach Golf valued at over $400 will be awarded to the ball nearest the pin.
For this option, no registration is required, simply turn up to the second hole at Woodend Golf Club, 12 Davey Street Woodend, from 10am to 8pm on either Saturday 22 or Sunday 23 June. Clubs, balls and lighting available at the venue.

We've had a lot of questions about how to use your NDIS plan to support attendance at the World Down Syndrome Congress.
You might be able to use NDIS funds to cover things like transport, personal care, registration and more.
To qualify, just make sure your plans for WDSC line up with your NDIS goals โ like learning new skills for everyday life or getting involved in the community. Parents and carers can also use their child's NDIS plan to join us at WDSC if it helps them reach their goals.
The congress now have guidance on their website and Mable has a great webpage with information and a checklist that you can use or send to your plan manager to justify the use of funds: https://mable.com.au/newsroom/how-to-use-ndis-funding-wdsc/
