Historically, evidence-based psychological research has provided useful applied decision support tools that have helped to facilitate the conduct of incident investigations across a range of applications, including Work Health and Safety, criminal/police investigations and legal/regulatory inquiries.
From the ground-breaking work of psychologist Elizabeth Loftus on the reliability of eyewitness testimony in the 1970’s, Ross and Nisbett’s (1977) fundamental attribution error that has drawn attention to cognitive bias in investigations, to the game-changing work of Professor James Reason in the 1990’s which effectively shifted the focus of causation from the person to the organisation.
This webinar counts down the Top 10 contributions of psychological science to improving the quality of incident investigations with a focus on Work Health and Safety applications. These contributions have helped to instil a more evidence-based human factors approach to incident investigations.

We've successfully used ICAM in a child safety investigation which identified several key organizational factors that played a big part in the cause of the incident.

For some time now, we've been pushing the boundaries with ICAM, to prove that it can be applied to any industry and any issue in the workplace, including HR/IR issues and beyond.
This is part 1 of a multi-part interview I did with FamSAFE Director, Jeanie Dean, to discuss how and why ICAM fits and can be used to assist organizations in complying with child safety legislation.
In this part, we talked about the first meeting between Jeanie and I, when she first flagged our involvement. My initial response was, "no way!", but as we discussed and explored a scenario, I realized there were many crossovers from general WHS, into the child safety space.
