Rewind to WWI 1916 where, despite being made the same rank, nurses earned half of what their male counterparts earned.
To serve in the AANS, nurses had to be educated, have 3 years of training and be unmarried.
While the Australian Army started giving officer rank and badges of rank to nurses in 1916, wages were not equal, and so low that nurses on the frontline often had to rely on money sent by family.
When Australian nurses returned from WWI, they continued to organise together and work to lift the status of nursing, midwifery and women's work, establishing formal registration and state-based training associations, coming together in the Australian Nursing Federation in 1924.
Over the past 100 years, nurses, midwives and carers have organised together, working collectively to lift wages and have their work respected and valued appropriately. This October we celebrate

Australian women currently retire with an average of 25% less superannuation than men.
Having no superannuation on Commonwealth PPL costs Australians tens of thousands of dollars in their retirement due to the absence of compounding interest on retirement savings when parents take time off work to care for their children.
Proposed amendments by the Coalition to the government’s legislation on superannuation for Commonwealth Paid Parental Leave (PPL) have been slammed by unions, including the ANMF.

An important message to all union members.
Many of the original members of the ANF were visionary leaders and activists for nurses and women, far ahead of their time. They laid the foundation for the ANMF’s achievements today such as Evelyn Conyers.

2/7 General Australian Hospital Nurses, 1942.
During both World Wars, nurses helped redefine the role of women through their bravery and dedication. As they came together to serve, many met interstate colleagues for the first time, becoming aware of the differences and gaps in wages and conditions across Australia.
This solidarity sparked a drive for greater economic equality and recognition within nurses and midwives, in service and back home.
Today, nurses and midwives continue organising together through the ANMF, fighting for better wages, working conditions, an equitable health system and safe patient care.
