Legislation to establish an ISSB-aligned mandatory climate reporting regime in Australia was introduced into the House of Representatives on 27 March 2024 - Technical update | MinterEllison 10/09/2024

🎉 Australia has passed a new law requiring 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 starting in 2025: https://bit.ly/47kmH9j
This is huge news! What does it mean?

To begin with, larger companies (500+ employees) will be required by law to publish an annual sustainability report that includes:
✅ A 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 prepared in accordance with the (yet-to-be-finalized) AASB standard.
✅ A 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬’ 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 about the statements and notes.

Medium-sized entities will need to comply by July 2026 or July 2027 (depending on revenue). However, SMEs and charities with revenue under $50m will be excluded. SMEs that are part of the supply chain of larger companies (Scope 3 emissions) may still need to engage with climate reporting requirements.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭?
If your company has never done this before, the best step is to consult with an expert sustainability or EHS firm (we recommend www.keramida.com). It’s also important to collaborate with a graphic design team that specializes in sustainability reporting (such as https://ethicaldesign.co) to bring your report to life.

📊 A creative team can present your emissions data transparently, making it easy to understand and compliant with accessibility standards. Plus, they can design beautiful, branded reports and templates that save time, money, and effort in the long run. By getting your reporting right from the start, future reporting will be a breeze!

It’s funny – I just wrote an article about this a couple of weeks ago (maybe we saw this coming). Read more here 👉 https://bit.ly/3Mbg4fS

This article by Local Peoples discusses the importance of transparency, accountability and a human-centred approach in AI development to avoid bias and harm. This includes taking into account the diverse needs of all individuals, particularly marginalised communities.

🖋 A few mockups to showcase some of the annual HubSummit conference assets we worked hard on for EnergyHub earlier in the year, including:
👉 HubSummit logo design, brand concept, and secondary brand assets (updated year-on-year)
👉 Printed event collateral (e.g. large posters and pull-up banners, stage backdrops, event signage, postcard invitations, custom name badges, lanyards, and more)
👉 Digital event marketing collateral (e.g. website banners, ‘save the date’ email banners, and more)
👉 Design of long-form slide decks for each speaker from the EnergyHub team for all 4 consecutive HubSummit conferences. Each PowerPoint presentation included a range of custom infographics and illustrations.
🌐⚡ EnergyHub and the 100+ utility, device partners, and industry partners are transforming the power grid to make it more flexible, reliable, and sustainable. EDCo. is excited to partner with pioneers in the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) space on a number of interesting design projects each year, including full branding suites for the HubSummit conferences!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟:

👩🏻‍💻 We recently worked on the design and development of new philanthropy pages for our remarkable client, Medicines Development for Global Health (MDGH).

🎗 MDGH is a global not-for-profit biopharmaceutical organisation and registered charity dedicated to the development of medicines for neglected diseases.

💊 MDGH addresses global health inequities by researching, developing and delivering new and improved medicines to those who need them most. Many neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are primarily endemic in low- to middle-income countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.

💡 Their innovative not-for-profit model is resource-efficient and collaborative, based on public health needs in these affected areas rather than commercial opportunity. They are doing truly amazing and transformative work. But it is still expensive to provide the gift of new medicine and 𝐌𝐃𝐆𝐇 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭.

💰 Every donation, big or small, can make a difference in delivering medicines to many of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world.

✍️ Our team was engaged to work on the line editing, copyediting, proofreading and visual design of TAL Apparel’s seventh Sustainability report for 2021-2022.

🪡 We creatively explored the theme ‘Threading Resilience’ throughout this interactive report, spanning 85 pages. Custom illustrated threads of cotton were incorporated to design the section numbers and they were also digitally sewn into real TAL garments 👔.

🌱 TAL has demonstrated resilience and seized opportunities to conduct their business in a more sustainable way in every aspect during the great reset of the pandemic and this is something we commend them for 👏.

📘 This is the third biennial sustainability report we've designed and edited on behalf of TAL for consecutive periods: 2018, 2020, and 2022.

In 2023 we were contracted to work on the conference branding project for the upcoming EEC (Energy Efficiency Council) National Conference 2024. This included:

✍️ Logo design & strategy: the brief for the new conference logo involved thorough consideration of target audiences, parent branding, vision, expected outcomes and creating a solid strategy for the best design approach. The theme of the conference, “Driving Action in Australia on Efficiency, Electrification, and Decarbonisation,” was incorporated into the design.

⚡️ Secondary branding/supporting graphics: as part of this project, we designed a vector pattern illustration featuring custom energy-focused iconography. This illustration is intended to be used on various marketing collateral, including banners, posters, event agenda and more.

🎨 Brand style tile: we created a basic brand style tile showcasing the conference logo in all formats and on various backgrounds, the chosen colour palette and brand fonts.

"There are many things we want to celebrate about Australia, but 26 January doesn’t represent an inclusive day for everyone. The dispossession of Australia's First Peoples began on this day in 1788 representing a day of mourning rather than celebration. There is a growing movement in Australia to ‘Change the date’ of Australia Day to a day more inclusive of all Australians. This is a movement we support as a company."

This 4-page Annual report summary brochure written, designed and printed on behalf of our client, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL). The purpose of this document is to provide a snapshot of BSL's year of impact and achievements for FY 2023.

🌱 Our sustainability strategy for this project:

✅ The client chose to design and print the summary brochure in addition to the full 52-page print report as a way to ensure they could print fewer of the larger reports (printing these only for primary stakeholders) and thus save paper and reduce print costs and resources.
✅ The summary brochure was designed with an impact infographic in the centrefold which can be opened up and put on a wall by BSL staff, to be used as a poster. The idea here was to ensure staff could reference the organisation's many achievements throughout the current year and seek motivation and inspiration from them. It also means that the printed piece has a longer life, enhancing its usefulness and reducing immediate wastage.
✅ The summary brochures were printed sustainably on 100% recycled uncoated EcoStar paper stock.
✅ Our annual donation of trees has been calculated to offset this project.🌳

👀 Here's a glimpse of the print version Brotherhood of St Laurence Annual report 2023.

The content and design for this 52-page printed report was adapted from BSL's comprehensive digital report in the form of a website, written and produced by our team last year.

The A4-booklets were printed on FSC certified 100% recycled uncoated EcoStar paper stock. ♻️☑️
