John Lewis 💚

"As ANZAC Day approaches tomorrow, we want to highlight one of our very own, John Lewis, who has a very special connection to the military.

John’s military service commenced at the age of 18 years when he was selected to attend the Royal Military College, Duntroon. Upon his graduation as First Lieutenant, he served as an Infantry Officer including various postings across Australia. In 1992 he was selected to serve with the United Nations in Cambodia, completing two tours of active service. The aim of the mission was to restore peace and civil rule in a country ruined by decades of civil war including the Khmer Rouge who killed 1.7 million people through forced labour and genocide from 1975 to 1979. The UN successfully achieved the objective of a free and fair election in 1993.

For his service in Cambodia, John was awarded the United Nations Medal, the Australian Active Service Medal (with clasp Cambodia) and the Returned from Active Service Badge. In 2014, his Unit was awarded a Meritorious United Citation for sustained outstanding service in warlike operations in the Australia Day Honours List. At the age of 33 years, John retired from the Army in the rank of Major.

Anzac Day holds a very special place in John’s heart. It commemorates the service and sacrifice of all Australians in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. This includes both of his grandfathers who served with the AIF in World War 2. On Anzac Day, John will quietly remember and honour all those who served, and most importantly those who never returned home."
