Just a little public service announcement… often people don’t know about or remember they have a pollen cabin filter that filters the air in the cabin of their car.
This cabin filter is the result of your car being 12 months overdue for a service.

Here's something you wouldn't see everyday...

Drum brakes on the front wheels of a car! Maybe that's because this '64 Austin Healy was made at a time when safety wasn't a concern for the driver.

The rigid frame, and hard suspension made it a beaut for fangin' 'round the race track, but when it came to stoppin', well, you'd might wanna start pumping the brakes a few more metres back then you'd need to if you had hydraulic discs like they are today.

This ol' beaut came in to the workshop to get new front drum brakes and a suspension assembly upgrade, to give it a boost in safety, although nothing like the new cars... there's nothing like driving a classic mechanical machine like the Austin Healy

'Lubricants Other than Engine Oils that Need to be Changed'

Every time your car is serviced the engine oil is changed, but there are other oils in your car which should be changed periodically.

What are these other oils?

The automatic transmission, manual gearbox, differential and power steering systems are all lubricated by oil or fluids of various types. Some of these systems don’t have the luxury of an oil filter, like the engine uses.

Simply put, oil reduces friction between mechanical parts in a car and thus reduces wear. Unless these oils are drained periodically and replaced with clean oil, parts of your car can wear more quickly than they should.

As oil gets older it collects abrasive impurities. Additives used in the oil to help it suit a certain application can diminish over time and with use. Heat produced, particularly in automatic transmissions, can also affect the oil’s lubricating properties.

How often should the oil be changed?

This will vary depending on the particular oil, the job it does and the type of driving you to do. The automatic transmission, manual gearbox, differential and power steering systems are all lubricated by oil or fluids of various types.

Some of these systems don’t have the luxury of an oil filter like the engine uses which affects the oil’s lubricating properties.

Why You Need A Transmission Flush?

In a simple draining of old transmission fluid, a drain plug in the transmission is removed and the remaining fluid is allowed to accumulate in a pan.

While this process does make it possible to rid the transmission of a significant amount of the older fluid, it does not thoroughly cleanse the system.

The end result is that without a transmission fluid flush, there is still a 50 – 60% amount of older fluid present. When this is the case, the older fluid will mingle with the new transmission fluid and thus dilute the effectiveness of the new fluid.

By employing a transmission flush, all of the older fluid is removed and the overall transmission system is cleansed. This means there is less residue to contaminate and weaken the new transmission fluid.

The presence of new transmission fluid means less stress placed on the transmission which also lowers the running temperature, which in turn can prolong the life of the transmission.

It is recommended that a transmission flush and filter be changed on an average vehicle approx every 45,000km

‘Why You Need Your Car Serviced?’

Some car manufacturer's recommend service intervals from 10,000 km to 20,000 km but this is often reduced under certain conditions.

We generally recommend more frequent servicing, depending on factors such as vehicle age and various driving conditions.

Apart from the benefits of changing the oil, regular servicing allows us to identify safety concerns and replace any worn items before they can cause major damage.

Why do we need to change the engine oil?

By - products of combustion, particularly when the engine is cold, causing sludge to build up in the oil. This sludge can block oil galleries and starve moving parts of lubrication.

Dilution from fuel will make the oil thinner and reduce its lubricating properties.

Metal deposits from moving components build up in the oil and accelerate engine wear.

Using top-quality oils - reduces the effect of these problems, and greatly increases the life of your engine.

Regular servicing also improves fuel economy, increases engine performance and keeps your car in a safe and reliable condition.
