So What Is A Remedial Massage?
Remedial massage is a hands on therapy which aims to treat muscles that are damaged, knotted, tense or immobile. This treatment is used to identify and repair damaged areas of the body, whilst aiding the body’s own healing process. Depending on the injury or desired outcome, the pressure can be of deep intensity, or it can be more soft and shallow.
Remedial massage is different to other forms of gentle relaxation massage. A remedial massage therapist undergoes extensive training to gain advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology. It is used for the prevention and management of injuries, particularly soft tissue injuries. Therapists are trained to assess your body, observe changes over time and design individual treatment plans for each client. Remedial massage is so much more than a “feel-good” massage. Specific techniques are used to address your injury, postural or joint issues. Remedial massage can be performed in conjunction with other health professionals such as a Physiotherapist as part of a whole treatment plan.

🔈 SERRATUS POSTERIOR INFERIOR - OVERLOOKED CAUSE OF LOWER BACK PAIN
You have a client who tells you this:
'I reached for something and suddenly I felt a sharp spasm in the lower part of my back, slightly to the side of the spine, at the bottom of the ribs, and when I breathe in really deep I can feel it'.
Based on the above description you should suspect that you might be dealing with the Serratus Posterior Inferior muscle.
💡 Where is the Serratus Posterior Inferior muscle?
The Serratus Posterior Inferior muscle connects the lower 4 ribs to four vertebrae (T11, T12, L1, L2) in the low back.
💡 What movements does the Serratus Posterior Inferior muscle control?
✔️ Forced expiration (breathing out when breathing hard)
✔️ Assists with twisting at the waist
✔️ Assists with straightening the trunk (standing up straight)
💡 Activities that cause Serratus Posterior Inferior pain and symptoms:
✔️ Twisting the body when lifting
✔️ Overreaching overhead or to the side of the body
✔️ Lifting something heavy using the back muscles instead of leg muscles
✔️ Sleeping on a sagging or too soft mattress
ℹ️ Trigger Points
Trigger points in the Serratus Posterior Inferior may cause an uncommon local ache radiating over and around the muscle.
This may extend across the back and over the lower ribs, even continuing through the chest to the front of the body.
This discomfort is typically described by clients as a nagging ache.
In many cases this pain remains after other trigger points have been inactivated. This should be a good indicator for the therapist to recheck the Serratus Posterior Inferior for undiscovered trigger points.
👩🔬 Stretching for self-release of the Serratus Posterior Inferior
Cross your forearms just above the wrist, at about chest height. Inhale deeply as you slowly raise them up until the area where the arms cross is level with your forehead. Now lower the arms as you exhale.
Do this once or twice, allowing for a brief rest (a few breaths) before repeating. Do this exercise set several times a day.
LOW BACK PAIN OR KIDNEY PAIN?
Every disease or ill health condition has certain characteristics which are specialized only to that particular condition or illness. Knowing the symptoms, characteristics, causes and triggers, etc about the diseases will help one take effective step in treating the same. In this current article we will be talking about the differences between the back pain and the kidney pain, taking into consideration some of the most important factors.
Differences Between Back Pain And Kidney Pain Based On The Location/Area Showing The Pain Symptoms:
Back pain can be experienced anywhere in the lower back or in the buttocks.
While, Kidney pain usually occurs in the portion between the ribs and hips (also known as flanks) and also may be experienced in the upper abdomen.
Differences Between Back Pain And Kidney Pain Based On Characteristics Of The Pain:
In case of the back pain, the pain usually changes from time to time and is not constant.
However in case of the kidney pain there is usually a constant pain until the last, it maybe a sharp pain (in kidney stones) or maybe dull pain (in kidney infection)
Difference Between Back Pain And Kidney Pain Based On The Types:
Taking the back pain into account first, it can be divided into neck pain, upper back pain and lower back pain. They can also be categorized as acute back pain, where the pain exist for 4 weeks, sub acute back pain, pain for 4 weeks to 12 weeks, and any back pain beyond 12 weeks is termed to be chronic back pain.
However in case of the kidney pain, the pain can be either kidney stone or that of the pain of kidney infection. Usually kidney pain due to kidney stones is very much severe, while the pain due to kidney infection might be mild. However both the type of kidney pains are associated with symptoms like vomiting, nausea and fever.
Difference Between The Back Pain And Kidney Pain Based On Causes:
Now, coming to the causes we can also differentiated between the back pain and the kidney pain in the following ways.
Back pain can be caused due to many factors including sciatica, backbone fractures (Vertebral body fracture), fracture of pedicle, fracture of lamina, disc bulge, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, metastatic vertebral cancer and paravertebral muscle spasm.
However kidney pain occurs with kidney stones, kidney infection (pyelonephritis), glomerulonephritis, kidney cancer and renal infarction.
Difference Between Back Pain And Kidney Pain Based On The Triggers:
There are triggers for back pain and also kidney pain which might initiate the pain signs and symptoms.
Most common triggers for back pain include prolonged sitting in one posture, long time standing, moving etc.
On the other hand, kidney pain is mainly triggered by excessive intake of fluids, i.e. in case of ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Though moving is not included in the list of triggers for kidney pain.
Difference Between Back Pain And Kidney Pain Based On The Area Of Its Spreading:
Now when we look for the differences between back pain and kidney pain based on the area of their spreading, we can say back pain spreads to back of the thigh, buttock, calf, foot and also the toes in one or both the feet. While kidney pain usually spreads to the lower abdomen, inner thigh etc.

Psoas Syndrome
A very rare condition, psoas syndrome happens when the psoas muscle (a long muscle in the back) is injured. This condition causes back pain. Anyone can get psoas syndrome, but athletes are at a higher risk. It is typically treated with physical therapy.
What is psoas syndrome?
Psoas syndrome is an uncommon, and often misdiagnosed, condition that can appear as refractory lower back pain (pain that stays even after treatment) accompanied by other symptoms. The condition occurs when the psoas muscle—the long muscle (up to 16 inches) in your back—is injured. The psoas muscle is located in the lower lumbar region of the spine and extends through the pelvis to the femur. This muscle works by flexing the hip joint and lifting the upper leg towards the body. A common example of the movement created from this muscle is walking.
Psoas syndrome is a very rare condition. Other conditions—disc herniation, arthritis, facet or sacroiliac pain—are much more common. When those conditions are treated, often with physical therapy, the psoas muscle is also stretched and strengthened. This can help treat psoas syndrome without it ever being diagnosed.
Hip impingement,
or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), occurs when the femoral head (ball of the hip) pinches up against the acetabulum (cup of the hip). When this happens, damage to the labrum (cartilage that surrounds the acetabulum) can occur, causing hip stiffness and pain, and can lead to arthritis.
Symptoms
In the early stages, there may be no symptoms associated with hip impingement or symptoms may be mild or vague. Some typical symptoms include:
- Stiffness in the thigh, hip, or groin
The inability to flex the hip beyond a right angle
- Pain in the groin area, particularly after the hip has been flexed (such as after running or jumping or even extended periods sitting down)
- Pain in the hip, groin, or lower back that can occur at rest as well as during activity

THE INCREDIBLE BENEFITS OF A HOT STONE MASSAGE
If you want to try a new way of relaxing, a hot stone massage might interest you. It’s a type of massage therapy done by placing hot stones in different regions of the body. The stones used are volcanic rocks; basalt, in particular, is the popular option. The heat they release gets deep into the skin and the muscles, providing relaxation and relief from tension.
Hot stone massages are beneficial for conditions like muscle pain, arthritis and stress. Improved blood circulation and digestion are the other benefits of a hot stone massage.

Self-Care Tools to Relieve Sciatic Pain
1.Nutrition! Treat yourself to a diet rich in whole grains, and organic fruit and veg, nuts, fatty fish and soluble and insoluble fibre. Also include anti-inflammatory substances in your diet such as turmeric, ginger, green and black tea. Vitamins B12 and B6 also help improve nerve health and reduce sciatica.
2.Self-massage with a massage ball, targeting the muscle area (ie. in the lower back and/or glutes) identified by your therapist.
3.Hang from a chin up bar to decompress your spine. This stretches the back and releases minor pressure on the affected nerve.
4.Gentle stretching exercises and simple yoga poses (recommended if you can move without debilitating pain).
5.Heat and Ice therapy. Icing helps reduce the inflammation, while heat packs improve blood flow, providing temporary but immediate pain relief so you can breathe easy.
6.Rest or keep moving (ie. walking in swimming pool)
If sciatic pain is beginning to bother you, first visit your GP for an MRI, then visit your massage therapist for targeted relief, and an ongoing treatment plan (including home exercises between appointments). A single appointment will most likely provide immediate relief but there is no magic bullet for chronic aches and pains. Long term improvements will happen only with ongoing therapy and an active treatment plan.
