Inspirational Spotlight: Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder, born Stevland Hardaway Morris on May 13, 1950, is a beacon of resilience and talent. Blinded shortly after birth due to retinopathy of prematurity, Stevie's journey showcases the triumph of spirit over adversity. From an early age, his extraordinary musical talent shone through. He mastered multiple instruments, including the piano and harmonica, demonstrating that his blindness would not limit his potential.

At just 11 years old, Stevie signed with Motown’s Tamla label, launching a remarkable career that would span decades. His groundbreaking hits, such as "Superstition," "Isn't She Lovely," and "I Just Called to Say I Love You," have made an indelible mark on the music world, earning him over 25 Grammy Awards and solidifying his status as one of the greatest musicians of all time.

Beyond his musical achievements, Stevie is a passionate advocate for social justice and humanitarian causes. He uses his platform to champion civil rights, reminding us that art can drive change. His life embodies the belief that challenges do not define us; rather, our determination and spirit shape our legacy.

Stevie Wonder continues to inspire millions, proving that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible. His music and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place resonate with people of all ages, encouraging us all to reach for our dreams.

BTS Aust. Proudly Sponsored This Year's "In The Driver's Seat" Event at Sandown Racecourse!

This Event Was Established by Warrandyte Lions Club and Has Been Running for the Past 25 Years! This Incredible Event Provides an Unforgettable Driving Experience for People Who Are Blind or Have Low Vision, Allowing Them to Take the Wheel and Enjoy the Thrill of Driving in a Safe and Supportive Environment—Something That Those of Us Who Are Lucky Enough to Have Our Sight Take for Granted With Our Daily Commute.

The VIPs Certainly Showed No Fear, Reaching Speeds of 100km and Honking the Horn Up the Straight! People Flew in From All Over Australia for This Experience.

Our Managing Director Roland Attended Alongside Team Members Kierin and Jordyn on Sunday. It Was a Chilly, Rainy Day Absolutely Brimming With Joy and Excitement. To See the Smiles on Everyone's Faces and Hear the Experiences of the VIPs Was So Special. The Effort That the Lions Put in to Pull This Together Each Year Is Commendable.

But What Did We Do for the Day? Well, BTS Aust. Wasn't There to Advertise. Jordyn and Kierin Provided Some Relief to the Volunteers by Jumping on the Traffic Lollipops in the Morning. Throughout the Day, Our Goal Was to Speak Directly With the End Users of Our Braille and Tactile Products and Hear the Experiences of Those in Our Community Who Are Blind or Have Low Vision, So That We May Gain Invaluable Insights Into What They Need in Wayfinding and Better Represent Them in Our Work.

- Shaun Gave Us Some Feedback on Designs, What Forms of Media Work Best for Him to Get News, and He Loved Our Braille Tactile Maps.

- Michelle (Who Only Lost Her Sight 4 Years Ago) Told Us About How People Walk into Her and Her White Cane When Out in Public Spaces. She Also Spoke About Her Experience Learning Braille Over the Last 12 Months.

- Amanda Told Us Where in Her Day-to-Day Life Braille Would Help Her and Gave Us New Product Ideas!

It Was an Absolute Pleasure to Have Been a Part of the Day and We Cannot Wait for 2025!

Welcome to the First Instalment of The Inclusive Academy! TIA Will Focus on Accessibility Standards, Products, Things You Need to Know, Real Life Experiences and How You Can Help Make the World More Inclusive.

This Week's Topic: TGSI's
What Are They & Why Are They So Important?

Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSI's) are specifically designed ground surface features that provide crucial information to users.

TGSI’s come in two patterns:
- Dots: Used in warning indicators to alert users to hazards.
- Parallel Lines: Used in directional indicators to guide users along a safe path.

TGSI's are made from various durable materials, such as metal, ceramic, rubber, or concrete, to withstand different environmental conditions.

What Is Their Purpose?

TGSI’s are designed to assist those who are blind or have low vision in our community with navigating public spaces, safely and independently. By feeling the raised patterns with their feet or a cane, users can identify the type of indicator, interpret the information through touch and make decisions based on the information being conveyed.

Why Are They So Important?

- Providing Information about the user’s surroundings, helping them to navigate.
- Ensuring Safety and alerting users to potential hazards to avoid accidents & Injuries.
- Promoting Independence. TGSI's, allow individuals to navigate public spaces independently without relying on others for guidance.
-Accessibility. Making public spaces more inclusive and navigable, promoting equal access for all.

Stay Tuned for More!

Watch the Video:
https://youtu.be/VtDlKerpJqs?si=rLd2Y--VMO0PuD4O

"In The Driver's Seat" is an incredible program ran by Warrandyte Lions Club that has been running for over 25 years and has allowed thousands who are blind or have low vision (VIP’s) the exhilarating experience of getting behind the wheel of a car. Partnering with professional driving instructors, participants can safely enjoy the thrill of driving and even reach speeds up to 100 kilometres per hour!

For individuals like Kathleen, whose vision has limited her independence, this program is more than just an adrenaline rush. It's a unique opportunity to partake in an activity many of her friends do daily. Despite having only 15-20% vision remaining, Kathleen cherishes the rare moments of freedom and normalcy that driving offers.
