Dr James Goetz - Hobsons Bay Health Group James wanted to become an Osteopath from the age of 15, as he wanted to understand why he was experiencing constant low back pain and what could be done to minimise or prevent it. Osteopathy provided the holistic approach he was looking for and how the body was seen as one functioning unit.

What is the difference between an osteo and a physio?
Osteo Matt delved into the question that we get asked all the time at the clinic. The answer is not always simple and truthfully, there are more similarities between the two than differences...
π¨ASH test protocol - along with orthopedic testing of the shoulder. This test helps identify individuals that have apprehension when generating force and doing so quickly. It test the shoulder in 3 positions I,Y, T.
βοΈAim to push down as hard as you can for 3-5 seconds in all 3 positions.
β‘οΈ The key takeaway from this test protocol is how quickly someone can generate force in vulnerable positions. Rate of force development is crucial in protecting a joint from re-injuring. The quicker you can stabilize the area the less likely you are to damage it.
β‘οΈ some really good research done by Ben Ashworth has highlighted he need to assess RFD when returning to play in contact sports such as football and rugby.
πIf you want your shoulder assessed and an individually tailored rehab program. DM the page and find out more πͺπ½πͺπ½πͺπ½
Exercise is great for back health - if you do it in the right way. Lachie has written up some tips on how to get it right.
If you have any back issues, have a chat with one of our osteos.
Switching on your glutes before you train them means they do the work, rather than relying on surrounding muscles picking up the slack.
Check out Matt's short video on Glute Activation to improve your form for other exercise.
What are Forceplates?
Forceplates are a set of metal plates that detect movement, power and force generated during certain gym movements such as a squat or a box jump, they also pick up on asymmetries from side to side.
Previously only used on elite athletes, osteos and other allied health are now using them for patients.
The great thing about the Forceplates is that they aren't just related to injury and injury identification, they can also measure performance and improvements in performance.
The InBody scan measures changes to body composition over the duration of months and weeks, the Forceplates measure power and strength.
A lot of the time it is hard to know if you are truly getting stronger, but the force plates identify how much stronger and powerful you have gotten without having to lift extremely heavy weights (safety is a priority).
If you're keen to see how strong and powerful you have become or if you would like to see your injury risk then book in with Lachlan.
Can your child see an Osteo?
The answer is yes!
As Osteopaths, we are trained to treat a wide range of injuries, in people of all ages.
My name is James and I work on Sundays at Hobsons Bay Health Group. A focus of mine for the past few years is treating children aged between 5 and 15 years old.
We can often think that children donβt require Osteopathy treatment, as they are young and believe that the pain will resolve by itself.
While this can be true, there are also certain conditions that can develop in a growing body.
These types of conditions vary greatly, from scoliosis to traction apophysitis; to name a few.
However, these conditions can also be easily identified with an Osteopathic assessment.
Therefore, if you have noticed something different in the way your child moves, your child is super active, or you are just interested in getting them an assessment.
Booking in for an Osteopathic appointment may be the best first step!
