Today's Solar Eclipse in Melbourne was an incredible display of celestial mechanics 🌕

Witnessing the moon pass between the sun and the Earth was a remarkable reminder of our place in the Solar System.

Vidath, our resident Digital Technology Specialist, took a long 4000km drive from Perth to Melbourne, to join us here in Victoria.

Upon arrival, Vidath shared with us these beautiful photos and stories about the stunning views, long coastlines, charming towns and farms he encountered along the Great Australian Bight.

One of his most memorable moments was watching the deep and still ocean from top of the limestone cliffs at Nullarbor Cliffs, stretching as far as one can see.

We're so excited to be working with you in person Vidath, welcome back to Melbourne!

From the 24th of March this year, the way we register domain names in Australia for our websites changed.

Business owners, or simply anyone with or getting a website, now have access to simpler, more concise domain names with ‘.au’ now available as well as the standard ‘.com.au.’

If you already own a ‘.au’ domain name that was registered before the 24th of March, the corresponding .au direct domain has been placed on a 6-month priority hold for you, which means you get first dibs on it. After that priority period ending on the 20th of September 2022, on a first-come, first-served basis, the .au domain will be made available to the general public.

To learn more or to check your eligibility, check out the full article, ‘New ‘.au’ domain names – 7 things your business should know’, linked in our IG bio!

I sat down with one of our resident photographers, Telisha, to discuss some of her tips and tricks when taking images for social clients. Here's the rundown!

HD: How do you go about portraying a specific message through your photography?

TR: I find you have to be aware of the environment around the images or video content that are being taken, as everything contributes to the overall story. Find the right setting, lighting and person to be featured in shot and the story comes to life.

HD: What are some of your favourite editing hacks for IG?

TR: As I love LightRoom and Photoshop and praise them highly, when you’re on the go and in need of a quick quality edit, most editing apps found on most smartphones are cable of achieving your signature look. Apps like VSCO are a great hack for editing.

HD: What's the difference between photographing inanimate objects and people? How do you go about shifting your artistic approach to meet those challenges, if any?

TR: With people, I find there is more of a story to be told, more life within the image. Products are a little bit more difficult in terms of what you want the image to say, but if you're specific and to the point, you can become quite artsy with the photography style. I've noticed that with product shots it's generally best to keep it simple.

Thank you, Telisha! We're so excited to see your ongoing and future projects both both with Attractor and in your personal endeavours. 😊

Nobody manages social media accounts as Elise does.

Creative, Organised, and forward-thinking, Luci sat down with Elise to uncover her secrets as a Social Media Lead. What makes such a tricky job look so effortless?

Luci: What times are best to schedule posts for clients? Is it based on content?

Elise: The best time to post to your social channels depends on a few things, one being human behavior and peak times when most people or most of your audience would be online or on their phones. For most clients we work with, the best time to post is later in the evening as more of the audience is active on Facebook or Instagram.

Luci: Depending on the kind of post, what are the best ad objectives to use?

Elise: For posts to the feed, it depends on what your goal is, but usually you want to boost a post for engagement (likes, comments, shares), you can also boost a post for reach if your goal is brand awareness or to reach a wider audience with your message.

There are also sponsored ads, or, what we like to call in the social media world, 'dark posts'. These are ads or content that does not get shared to your feed, but you can target specific messaging that you don't want on your feed. Objectives for this style of ad can be reach, brand awareness, traffic, or depending on creative- video views. There are also objectives for consideration which are conversion-based if you are selling a product or looking for lead generation.

Luci: Any parting words of wisdom?

Elise: When it comes to social media and what works best, you need to think of the consumer of the content and your target audience, and share content that is relatable to them. It's good to also not come off sales-y in copy or messaging and try humanising your message. Put yourself in the consumers' shoes. Also, if you see a problem or situation in your social trends that you aren't happy with (i.e. low engagement) think of creative ways to test why or what your audience will engage with. Blaming the algorithm, or consistently sharing the same type of content is going to provide no growth.

A survey conducted by social media consultant Rachel Karten has underlined some of the reasons so many people are leaving their jobs in social media. With over 150 participants, almost all responses were related to stress, a decline in mental health, lack of work-life balance and general under-appreciation.

Emplifi has released an infographic titled "How to show Social Media Managers you care" in response to the growing number of dissatisfied social media workers. From adhering to their content calendar to prioritising their mental health, it is critical that we look after our team members—even more so in an industry where connectivity is almost constant.

A long weekend is just what we need to unwind, relax and spend time with the people who matter most to us. With the next long weekend approaching on March 11th, planning out your socials to prevent any unwanted stress is essential.

Planning and scheduling your content is a simple way to accomplish this; tools such as Facebook’s Creator Studio, Hootsuite and more allow you as the user to schedule out posts according to the pre-planned calendar. This ensures that you have enough posts going to your various platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter- this acts to keep your audience engaged and active.

If you’re out of the office for the long weekend, give your clients or boss a heads up. It may also be handy to have a meeting with your team before starting the break, to talk through and understand the procedure for any problems that may arise.

Finally, unplug and enjoy! We're not talking about total abandonment; it may be important for you just to check things are running smoothly over the mini-break. Before Creators or Marketers, we’re human. Let yourself breathe!

Oberlo's team has compiled a top ten list of Google Search statistics based on outsourced surveys to keep marketers up to date on consumer activity.

The infographic begins by outlining some fairly common knowledge about Google, such as the fact that it is the most visited website, that it dominates the search engine market, and so on. Having said that, the infographic contains some very interesting points that are not based on our general assumptions.

For example, 90% of their survey respondents (Searchengineland, 2018) said they were most likely to click on the first set of results on the first page. Another statistic shows that the most searched query on Google is 'Facebook' (Ahrefs, 2019).

YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, Neal Mohan, has recently shared his top areas of focus for 2022 in an overview titled ‘A Look at 2022: Community, Collaboration, and Commerce.’

A feature of the overview that is of particular interest to marketers, is the potential of live-stream shopping- “which every social app is now looking to develop.” YouTube tested an array of live-stream shopping event in 2021- with its “Holiday Stream and shop” being a notable event.

Wendy Yang, a product designer working on YouTube shopping drew from a study their team in partnership with Publicis and TalkShoppe ran- “89% of viewers agree that YouTube creators give recommendations they can trust.”

This only makes up a small portion of the overview- from Shorts monetisation options to the potential integration of NFTs and the Metaverse, the future of e-commerce and digital marketing is looking expansive through YouTube’s gaze.

In July of 2020, the European Court of Justice judged Meta’s data transfer standard between the EU and the U.S to be inadequate. Regulators in Europe are currently forming new legislation that will decide the fate of Facebook and Instagram’s activity in the EU.

Here’s what Meta had to say in their annual report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission:

“If a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted and we are unable to continue to rely on SCCs (standard contractual clauses) or rely upon other alternative means of data transfers from Europe to the United States, we will likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe… [it] would materially and adversely affect our business, financial condition, and results of operations.”

Meta since made a statement, clarifying that they believe an agreement can be made this year- “We have absolutely no desire and no plans to withdraw from Europe, but the simple reality is that Meta, and many other businesses, organisations and services, rely on data transfers between the EU and the US.”

Meta’s full-year performance result and Q4 2021 have highlighted a dramatic loss in a million active users daily. With Facebook's stock dropping 22% in premarket trading following its Q4 earnings, it marks the first time the report has ever noted a decrease in user numbers.

With an average of 1.93 billion active users as dropping to 1.929 billion in the last quarter of 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls out the rapid popularity of video-based platforms as part of the cause. “People have a lot of choices for how they want to spend their time and apps like Tiktok are growing very quickly.”

As a result, the company will be putting more attention into its Reels feature, a short-form video feature on Instagram. While the drop in Facebooks users is dramatic, Meta itself still gained approximately 10 million more users through its various other platforms.

After over 10 years since its development, Google has announced the launch of an updated Search Ads 360 platform to help advertisers grow with the exponential evolution of marketing practises.

The update will be equipped with a new user interface which makes navigation simpler, a stronger support across multiple advertising channels, and the centralisation and scaling of “day-to-day tasks and key activities” (such as campaign management, automated rules and labels).

Not only that but Search Ads 360 was evolved with the same technology that powers Google Ads- meaning that most Google Ads content is now available for management. Product Director at Adswerve, Brent Ramos champions it as a “total game-changer”.

The advanced ads management platform is not necessarily engineered for everyday marketers and SMBs, but rather focuses on enterprise users- Google suggests users check out the new Skillshop learning path: ‘Get Started with Search Ads 360’

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” – ‘Sonnet 18’, Shakespeare

From heart-shaped boxes of chocolate to extravagant bouquets of roses- everybody loves love. But do you know the slightly darker origins of Valentine’s Day that precede its commercial popularity?

Like many historical events, the exact origin of Valentine’s Day is contested.

Perhaps most plausibly, we should look toward the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia as the starting point. The festival involved quite barbaric methods of courtship, from sacrificing a goat and a dog to whipping women “with the hides of the animals they had just slain.”

Fast forward to February 14 around 278 A.D. St. Valentine was to be executed in ancient Rome, and, according to legend, he had befriended his jailer’s daughter, and signed a letter to her with “From Your Valentine” the night before his ex*****on.

It wasn’t until the late 16th century that Valentines became a more palatable concept, with Shakespeare and other classic authors elevating romanticism into popular culture.

By the 1700s, Valentine’s Day had made its way to the U.S. It became common for “friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes” in both the U.S and England.

In 1822, Cadbury chocolate company sold the first heart-shaped box of chocolates. In 1849, the ‘Mother of the American Valentine’, Esther Howland, started selling her Valentine’s Day cards- receiving 25 times the expected profit. By the 1980s, companies like Hallmark started to release Valentine-related commercials- in one advertising themselves as ‘The Valentine’s Store.’

Valentine’s Day, much like many other holidays has become significant in the contemporary marketing world. Your audience loves the idea of love just as much as we do, so don’t hesitate to get your platforms in the affectionate spirit!

A recent research paper published by the Journal of Marketing Research has taken popular marketing strategy and applied it to the digital world of retail.

“The endowment effect”, is the phenomenon stating that a consumer will value an item more if they own it. It can occur when a “consumer merely touches” a given product in-store.

The paper concludes that advertisements with depictions of a person holding, or touching a given product being sold will make consumers more “engaged and willing to pay more than if the item is displayed on its own.”

It’s no surprise that advertisement composition is absolutely crucial in selling a product- incorporating psychological factors such as human contact will be sure to elevate your marketing game!

Are your performance metrics actually accurate?

As a digital marketer, performance metrics are central in optimising and gauging the success of ad campaigns. Audience research experts, GWI, have found that over 33% of Australian internet users use some form of ad-blocker “or take steps to proactively clear cookies on a regular basis.”

This is skewing the metrics greatly. Both under-reporting from users blocking ads, and over-reporting of traffic and engagement from bots clicking on ads are becoming prevalent; Particularly in the retail sector.

For the full report and recommendations for overcoming these blocks, check out Insider Retails full article >>> https://insideretail.com.au/technology/ad-bots-and-ad-blockers-are-skewing-your-analytics-202201
