Do you live with chronic pain or know someone who does? Chronic pain affects over 3.6 million Australians. Self-care can help. See a few of our lifestyle tips & reminders for those living with chronic pain.
National Pain Week is an annual awareness event held each year to help ensure that people within our communities living with Chronic pain are receiving high quality standards of care. As physiotherapists we support patients with chronic pain to improve function, achieve their goals and help them enjoy a better of quality of life.
Pain is an incredibly helpful biological response design to protect us & promote our health and wellbeing. In support of National Pain week, we take a closer look at Pain & where it comes from, we also look at how a physiotherapist can help manage your pain & get you back doing what you love.
At Back In Motion we celebrate & recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples. We all must continue to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for systemic change & to keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities. How will you show your support?
What is H.A.R.M and why should you avoid these factors during the first 48 to 72 hours after an injury? H.A.R.M is a first aid acronym that stands for Heat, Alcohol, Running, Massage.

Want to run faster, longer and pain free?
Running has quickly become a fan favourite in the recent months due to lockdowns impacting gyms.
But like most physical activities, pain and injuries are part of the deal… unfortunately!
Here are some tips from one of our physiotherapists on how you can run faster, longer and pain-free!
Read the blog here and let us know what you think!

What are orthotics?
Orthotics are a shoe insert that can be used to help relieve foot, ankle and lower limb pain and also treat numerous foot conditions.
There are “off-the-shelf” orthotics available or a podiatrist can help with custom orthotics, specific for you. Orthotics can be used to help realign your feet if you have flat or high arches, to help manage pain such as plantar fasciitis and even help realign your ankles and knees during running.
Our podiatrists are trained to understand the biomechanics of your foot and can help provide specific support to help you manage any biomechanical deficiencies.
If you’ve been experiencing foot pain, book in to see a podiatrist to see how we can help!
Neutral, Stability or Maximum Stability – What shoes should I wear?
Everybody’s feet are different. Some of us have high arches, others have regular arches and others have completely flat feet.
So what does that mean for our choice of footwear?
It’s important to have shoes that help support the natural biomechanics of our bodies and keep us aligned.
People with flat feet traditionally roll their ankles inwards (pronation) and people with very high arches sometimes roll outwards (supination).
Having a physiotherapist assess your gait will help you make an informed decision on the type of footwear needed to help you stay injury free.
Book in for a running assessment and you can feel confident in your stride!

Congratulations Amanda on completing the half marathon yesterday. You are such an inspiration to all of us!!
Did you know we offer professional running assessments?
You may have heard the term before, but you might ask yourself… what exactly is a running assessment?
A running assessment is when a physiotherapist analyses your running biomechanics and then works with you to move better.
Biomechanics can be described as the science behind “how the body moves” and if we have biomechanical inefficiencies, we could be missing out on our potential or even putting ourselves at risk of injury!

WARMING UP
You’ve got your shoes on, your running playlist going and you’re ready to go!
As tempting as it can be to fly out the door at top speed or skip a warm-up in the interest of saving time, missing a warm-up can be a recipe for an injury!
If you start out too fast or too hard, you run the risk of pulling a muscle or even tweaking a tendon or joint. Nobody wants this!
A smart warm-up gives your body a chance to loosen up and get ready for strenuous exercise.
A short and smart warm up can be something as simple as:
- High knees on the spot
- Dynamic hamstring stretches
- Swinging toe touches
- Lateral leg swings
Try this out next time you go for a run!
Tag someone who forgets to warm up before a run.
Looking for the perfect Christmas gift for family and friends, but not sure what to get?
A Back In Motion gift card is the perfect gift for anyone who loves health, fitness and moving pain-free!
It can be used on any of our services at your closest Back In Motion practice.
Give the gift of movement! Contact your local Back In Motion practice today.
Did you know that strengthening your lower leg muscles are an effective way to help prevent shin splints?
Our last post briefly explained how shin splints happen, now let’s look at what we can do to help prevent them!
A common cause for shin splints can be due to weak lower leg and feet muscles, which create stress throughout the lower leg structure.
Doing simple exercises such as calf raises and feet strengthening exercises can help create a strong base for running.
For a full breakdown of why shin splints happen and how we can help with your pain, check out our blog!
