This year we are celebrating 100 years of architectural and cinematic wonder at The Capitol! 🎉 💯
From silent films to near-demolition, refurbishments and reinvention, the theatre has stood the test of time to remain a cultural icon of Melbourne.
Built in 1924 by renowned architects Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin, the Chicago-Gothic-style theatre is regarded their greatest interior design work.
The Capitol was the first extravagant “picture palace” to be built in Victoria, seating over 2,100 people in sweeping stalls and circles.
RMIT acquired the building 1999 and used the theatre for teaching and learning, and public programming activities.
Needing critical repairs, The Capitol closed its doors in 2014 and reopened in 2019 following a multi-million-dollar refurbishment, reclaiming its place as a Melbourne cultural icon.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Alec Cameron said RMIT was proud to restore and reopen The Capitol – now a place of transformative learning, teaching, research and mentoring for a new generation and those to come.
“More than a theatre, The Capitol of today is testament to RMIT’s determination to respect the past even as we prepare our students for an ever-changing future,” he said.
“The outcome remains a spectacular Melbourne icon, filled with RMIT’s innovative spirit.”
“We are proud to be custodians of such an important landmark and pay tribute to 100 years of history – with eyes firmly on the 100 ahead.”

Could the animals we eat cause the next pandemic in the form of antimicrobial resistance?
In some parts of the world, farm animals are fed antibiotics to boost their growth with very little regulation on the practice.
RMIT researchers warn this could lead to the development of superbugs in farm animals, which can be passed on to humans through consumption.
Drugs and pesticides used in farming can also leave a residue in the meat we eat, which can contribute to antibiotic resistance in humans.

New research shows that kids are often confused about what Australian content is and struggle to identify it. In the decade since Netflix and Stan first started offering streaming services in Australia, our local screen industries have seen a dramatic transformation, but not for the better.

It's National Science Week, and there’s no better time to celebrate some of the great science and tech research coming out of RMIT!
Did you know our researchers and their collaborators have created a recyclable ‘water’ battery that won’t catch fire or explode? 🔋🚰
💧 Water is used to replace organic electrolytes, which enable the flow of electric current between the positive and negative terminals, meaning their batteries can’t start a fire or blow up – unlike their lithium-ion counterparts.
The team’s battery is closing the gap with lithium-ion technology in terms of energy density, with the aim of using as little space per unit of power as possible.

Did you know that astronauts often struggle to eat their normal nutritional intake in space?
A world-first study into food aromas by scientists at RMIT may help explain why space food is often reported to taste bland. 🚫🧂🚫
The study tested how people’s perception of vanilla and almond extracts and lemon essential oil changed between environments on Earth 🌏 and the confined setting of the International Space Station 🛰️, which was simulated using virtual reality.
Results suggest that particular chemicals could explain change in perceptions, as well as a greater sense of loneliness and isolation.
Beyond astronauts, the research could have broader implications for improving the diets of isolated people, including nursing home residents, by personalising aromas to enhance the flavour of their food. 🍲🍕🥗
