Professor Brian Martin is a descendant of Bundjalung, Kamilaroi and Muruwari peoples, and is the Founding Director of Wominjeka Djeembana, Monash University
Assoc. Prof. James Oliver, School of Design, RMIT University, a Hebridean Gàidheal, and a founding member of Wominjeka Djeembana
This is a shared conversation on the connections between Indigenous Practice Research and Creative Practice Research, reflecting on the understanding that ‘relationships do not merely shape reality, they are reality’ (Wilson, 2008), expanding on themes of: relevance, respect, and refusal; ethics, aspirations and futures.
N’arwee’t Briggs, Brian Martin and James Oliver are currently working on a publication collaboration informed by these themes and broader reflections on their research collaborations, some of which will also inform this conversation.

Blak Design Matters – First Peoples Design Forum Fri 12 May 2023
KHT has led the way in this space with its innovative Blak Design program, now in its third year, fostering First Nations cultural innovation within the Victorian design sector and providing a platform for nurturing sustainable, First Nations design practices.
The forum will include a series of panel discussions and conversations, storytelling, Q&As and to finish the day, a celebration of Blak Design through food and music. Panel discussions include: What is Blak Design; Ownership of Identity in Design; and New ways in Benchmarking Fashion Sovereignty.
As a First Nation only event, the forum will provide opportunities for designers from all spheres of the design and artistic world to connect in a culturally safe space to interrogate the question of “What is Blak Design?”

The Project Officer will work with the Ngarara Willim Centre to improve its services to Indigenous HDR candidates, including input on the development of a leadership program and any other outcomes of the activities. An excellent planner and communicator, the Project Officer will provide high-quality support to ensure that projects achieve the desired outcomes.
As part of this role, the Project Officer will support and contribute to a wide range of activities including the development and implementation of project plans, needs analysis, report on project progress, stakeholder engagement and project communications.
