Humans swallow hundreds of times per day.
A correct chew and swallow pattern is vital for the long-term health of our teeth, gums and tongue.
As well as the obvious impact on our teeth, an incorrect swallow pattern means you are taking in extra air which can also lead to stomach digestive problems.

The hinge that connects the jaw to the skull is located at the front of the ears.
It’s called the Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) and when it’s not working it can cause no end of grief.
One of the main causes of TMJ dysfunction is the incorrect position of the tongue, which causes the jaw to overcompensate resulting in fatigue. It can also be caused by grinding of the teeth, excessive clenching or stress.

Rarely does something so simple have such a large impact on our overall health.
Nose breathing is one of those things.
Not only do you get a cleaner breath, with higher quality oxygen, deeper into your lungs, it’s also a sign that you are breathing just as you were designed. 🌿
While nearly 50% of the population are mouth breathers, nasal breathing has so many benefits that it is hard to argue against it.
Call Alicia today to find out more about nasal breathing and retraining how you breathe.

If your tongue sits forward or on the floor of your mouth, you could be doing more damage than you realise when it comes to dental, breathing and swallowing. 👅
A tongue thrust can move your teeth around, causing an overjet or open bite.
Orofacial myology is a series of non-evasive exercises that will train your tongue to sit in the correct position in your mouth.
Let’s not overlook narrow palates and the positive impact expansion can have improving nasal airflow, tongue space, and sleep for children and adults.

Last year, the world’s number 1 women’s tennis player Iga Swiatek was pictured training with mouth tape.
Why?
While most of us are not elite athletes, her coaches know what many of us are missing: that forcing ourselves to breathe through the nose delivers a higher quality, oxygen rich breath.
“In my two decades working as a dental hygienist, I saw so many patients suffering from various orofacial myofunctional disorders such as teeth clenching and grinding, jaw pain, headaches, thumb sucking and sleep issues. That is when I decided to find a natural and holistic solution to their problems.”

How should my face look at rest and why does it matter?
Lips sealed, teeth slighting apart, tongue resting on the palate of the mouth and breathing through the nose.
Get this right, and you’ll have better speech, dental, sleep and breathing outcomes.
Can you guess who is still keeping fit during our chilly winters mornings

When should I see an orofacial myologist? 🤔
Alicia sees kids who need to give up the habit of thumb sucking, patients who need pre or post-surgical tongue tie rehabilitation, anyone who has trouble sleeping, eating or chewing, and dental patients who benefit from strengthening the structure of their face and jaw for orthodontic stability.
