This lovely cat was referred to the Animalius Dentistry & Oral Surgery service after developing severe swelling of her lower jaw. She had been treated with alendronate (a bisphosphonate) for idiopathic hypercalcemia (high blood calcium). A CT scan and biopsy confirmed osteonecrosis (bone death) of the jaw, a rare complication of this treatment. Specialist vet dentist Dr Kevin extracted her damaged teeth, debrided the damaged bone and carefully closed her gum tissues over the affected bone, greatly improving her comfort.
In order to reduce the risks of this complication, Dr Kevin recommends performing a periodontal treatment prior to starting cats on any bisphosphonate. If extractions or oral surgery become necessary during the treatment course, consider referring to a specialist to minimise the risk of complications as any dental surgery can result in an episode of osteonecrosis.
The best way to show gratitude to the mentors who trained us is to become mentors ourselves. Here our specialist surgeon Dr Takanori and his resident Dr Jacelyn work together in a complex abdominal surgical procedure that had a wonderful outcome.

Beautiful Shadow!
This dog was referred to Animalius Dentistry for a linguoverted (base narrow) right mandibular canine tooth which was traumatising the hard palate (see picture one).
Treatment options included extraction, orthodontic movement or odontoplasty of the offending tooth. For the age the dog presented (5 months), one of the best options is the placement of composite crown extensions. This allows preservation of normal tooth shape.
Under general anaesthesia, temporary crown material was applied to both crowns to extend the crown length by double and oriented to extend between the maxillary 3rd incisor and canine teeth (see picture two).
After 10 weeks, the occlusion was corrected and the crown extensions were removed (see picture three).

We're smarter together!
Animalius had a big representation at the ANZCVS Vet Science Week Conference last week. Our staff presented 9 lectures and participated in 2 expert panels covering diverse topics such as developing high performing teams, imaging in feline diabetes patients, bronchial disease, aerodigestive disorders and video fluoroscopic swallow studies, repairing cleft palates, anaesthesia intersection with canine behaviour, sialoceles and maxillary odontogenic cysts. Living our values of being smarter together, which we couldn’t do without the support of those who stayed behind in Perth to keep the doors open!

Shark attack!
Shadow was a pup with an uncertain future, diagnosed with a congenital heart condition in our ultrasound clinic. One of Client Services stars gave him a loving home and look at him now, living his best life!
Cats have a high risk of hypoxaemia during anaesthetic induction. Pre-oxygenation for 3 minutes increases the body's oxygen stores and makes for safer anaesthetic induction.
