This triple bill season celebrating the intersection of ballet and contemporary dance is on now till 8 June.
WA Ballet thrills and divides with daring triple bill “Challenge your perception of ballet”, reads the program. And it’s no exaggeration as WA Ballet’s triple bill performance will do just that, through three eclectic and vastly different works.
🤩Chookas to all the movers and makers being showcased in 'State: Contemporary Vision' presented by West Australian Ballet, opening tonight at State Theatre Centre of Western Australia. 🎉Artistic Director, Raewyn Hill presents her iconic creation 'CARNIVALE.6', alongside new works by Robert Bondara (Nothing Twice) and James O'Hara (mattering). Rehearsals are in full swing at West Australian Ballet for 'Carnivale.6' as part of STATE: Contemporary Vision opening later this month. In this version Raewyn Hill further explores ‘feverish dance’ with the iconic folk dance The Tarantella, stating - 'I wanted to give the ballet dancers an entry point into the work that they could relate to. I became fascinated with The Tarantella - a similar story to the plague which dates back to at least the 15th Century. The dance has its own living tradition that is constantly being reinterpreted and has many regional variations for contemporary audiences worldwide.'
The Tarantella dance began as a cure for ‘tarantism’ which was a condition believed to have been caused by the bite of a poisonous spider. 🕷The spider’s victim then engaged in a frenetic dance, accompanied by musicians playing fast-tempo music, with the view to expel the venom.

DONATE - Co3 Contemporary Dance Co3 Heroes is Co3's annual giving program raising funds to support the creation of new work and career pathways for dance makers.
This week we are at West Australian Ballet's beautiful Maylands home, rehearsing Raewyn Hill's CARNIVALE.6 for their season of 'STATE: Contemporary Vision'. We are excited to announce our Co3 Dancers performing include: Annmarie Clifton-James, Francesca Fenton. Alex Kay, Alice Kell, Jo Omodei, and Latisha Sparks!
CARNIVALE evolves creatively with each new presentation. Hill says "I begin with the last iteration, the base line. Then with every new casting, I look at the dancers and see how their skills, training and mastery of movement can bring the work to life again anew. Once the dancers fully embody the spirit and energy of the work, I refine it and offer an additional extension to the movement phrases. This then creates a new base line for future presentations."

🐍DISCOVER THE MYTH.🐍 With WHITESNAKE3000 opening next week at State Theatre Centre of Western Australia we share what Zendra Giraudo and collaborators (Joe Paradise Lui, Emma Fishwick, Briannah Davis, Andrew Koi Sutherland) have been reading as part of their research and development - The Global White Snake (China Understandings Today) written by Liang Luo.
Extract: The Global White Snake uncovers how the White Snake legend often acts as an unsettling narrative of radical tolerance for hybrid sexualities, loving across traditional boundaries, subverting authority, and valuing the strange and the uncanny. A timely mediation and reflection on our contemporary moment of continued struggle for minority rights and social justice, The Global White Snake revives the radical anti-authoritarian spirit slithering under the tales of monsters and demons, love and lust, and reminds us of the power of the fantastic and the fabulous in inspiring and empowering personal and social transformations.
