When it comes to Australia’s homelessness deaths, we can’t change what we don’t measure | Lisa Wood 14/02/2024

"Australia is a developed and comparatively affluent country but we have left those experiencing homelessness behind. This is a growing cohort living in the shadows, trying to avoid judgment by day and find safe places to sleep by night; often deeply scarred by childhood and adult trauma; and too often falling through the cracks of health and welfare systems."

“You’re constantly worrying about where you’re going to sleep... It puts a strain on your body. It also increases stress levels, cortisol levels, gives you high blood pressure and weakens your immune system as well...And if you don’t have a mental health condition or addiction before you’re homeless, it’s no doubt that you will after you’ve experienced homelessness."

This news article from the Guardian highlights some of the grim realities of homelessness and the importance of providing healthcare that's accessible to all.

Sexual assault of homeless women almost 'universal', as minister labels shelter closure 'an insult' 28/11/2023

“The City of Perth clearly wants to get rough sleeping people off the streets and the homelessness services, Royal Perth, the homeless team, also want to get rough sleepers, especially the vulnerable ones off the street, so we have a common purpose.

"And I think by working with the Department of Communities, perhaps extending the current situation so that we cover over this difficult period over the festive season and then working to get a replacement safe night space for the women who are out there.

"I think this is about decency, helping the most vulnerable in our community and if there isn't a better time to do this than over Christmas, then when is?"

Sexual assault of homeless women almost 'universal', as minister labels shelter closure 'an insult' On the frontline of Royal Perth Hospital's emergency department, Amanda Stafford sees the harsh reality of what life is like for women sleeping on the streets and how sexual assault can be impossible to escape for many.

Homeless Healthcare outreach nurses standing in support and advocating for the continuation of Safe Night Space. Aged between 18 and 80, over 70% of the women who utilise the space are victims of family and domestic violence. Despite securing ongoing government funding, their doors are closing as the City of Perth is reclaiming the space for community use. As of the 30th November, having nowhere to go, these women will seek refuge in public spaces where they are vulnerable to violence and assault.

At Homeless Healthcare we’re fortunate to have not one, but TWO incredible mother-daughter duos working to support the health of people experiencing homelessness. These superstars provide double the compassion, double the impact and dare we say, double the trouble! 👿 😉 💕

Collaboration at its finest! 🤝 This wonderful team embodies a collective effort by Department of Health, Office of Homelessness, HEART team, Rooforce and Homeless Healthcare in facilitating a complex return to country.
It’s difficult to fathom, but many barriers impede a safe return home for Aboriginal people seeking medical care in Perth, and regrettably, many find themselves homeless. Through primary health support, ongoing engagement and transportation assistance, the team have made sure they can safely return to their families, housing and security. 👏

Homeless? You're likely to die at 50.

The average age of death for people who are homeless is 50 years, contrasting with the general Australian population median age of 81.7 years: a 30 year gap in the median age of death.

Why? Locally, nationally, and internationally there is a strong evidence-base confirming that health issues are a cause of homelessness and that deteriorating health is a major factor which keeps people trapped in long-term homelessness. This can become a revolving hospital door experienced by many people who are homeless and reducing their life expectancy. People who are homeless are also likely to have multiple morbidities at once – that is multiple symptoms or conditions of disease or illness.

Homeless Healthcare is the largest specialist homelessness primary care service in Australia, providing mobile street services, a drop-in clinic, services to people recently housed and a respite centre for people who have recently been discharged from hospital.

Dr Andrew Davies is at the coalface of caring for people who are homeless and sees first-hand the reasons for such a low life expectancy amongst people who are homeless. Don't miss this opportunity to hear him shed light on this shocking problem in our community and how we can do better in helping people live longer.
