It was great catching up with our Member and proud brand ambassador, Dr David Borshoff, this week at the ASA National Scientific Conference in Darwin. With the theme “Engaging, Enhancing, Evolving”, the event focused on how anaesthetists can optimise their practice outcomes in busy environments, thinking big and beyond the day-to-day work. Sam and Briony (pictured) also enjoyed engaging with other Members and delegates, helping them with all enquiries regarding their insurance and how to tailor our services to their needs.

We believe that meaningful conversations can make a difference. Whether it is a colleague, a mate, or a family member, or a Member, asking "Are you OK?" can be a small act with a huge impact.

With more than 65% of doctors in Australia experiencing burnout at some point in their lives, mental health support becomes an integral part of our support for Members, and today serves as a reminder to prioritise mental wellbeing and to continue fostering our values of courage (to take action), care (for our community), and commitment (to help each other).

But we were able to give reassurance to our AMA colleagues that, just like them, we are committed to serving our Members, preserving the independence of the medical profession, and providing the stability doctors need so that they can focus on the care of their patients”.

Help support and protect the communities in which we live.

We are putting a call-out for medical professionals living in Melbourne that would be interested in committing to monthly volunteer shifts with Street Side Medics, a not-for-profit, GP led organisation who provide a free mobile medical service to those experiencing homelessness and tough times.

Street Side Medics’ new Melbourne clinics are looking for a few more medical professionals (especially GPs) to join the team, including medical specialists, junior doctors, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses. You will be scheduled for one clinic a month with an overall commitment of 3 to 4 hours. There will be multiple spots available, starting from September this year.

If you'd like more information or to chat to a volunteer already involved, please reach out to [email protected].

As we start the celebrations of NAIDOC Week 2024, MDA National takes part in celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Indigenous peoples in Australia.

We support our Indigenous communities by respectfully promoting their message and through effective support of projects that aim to improve the quality of life in our communities. The Indigenous and Remote Eye Health Service (IRIS) Program delivered 400 cataract surgeries in the past financial year, and has committed to delivering another 400 by 2025, with the support of MDA National on funded sunglasses and educational materials. These glasses will continue to help prevent cataract development in a patient's second eye and encourage preventive health intervention within remote Aboriginal communities.
