Endless fantasy & sci-fi. New or old, common or obscure, pristine or crinkled, all $5 a book.

Here’s another uncommon series. Valery Leith, aka Tricia Sullivan, won the Arthur C Clarke award in 1995 for her book Dreaming in Smoke. An author of mostly standalone novels, the Everien trilogy is her only series.

Publishers Weekly said about this trilogy: “Leith will appeal to those who like the early Terry Goodkind, though she has a better command of language.” Goodkind fans, this one might be for you.

$5 a book or $15 the set plus postage for what it costs.

The Fourth Wing went ballistic globally and Australia was no exception. It was so big that many people believe Rebecca Yarros is a new author. She’s actually published over 20 books and has been doing it for 10 years.

But with the Empyrean series she really did smash it. #1 NY Times and every other best seller list. Must be good right?

Here are books 1 and 2 of the series. Trade paperbacks. $5 each as always plus postage.

What can you say about Chris Paolini? Wrote Eragon aged 16 (published when he was 19). The Guinness Book of Records recognised him as the youngest author of a bestselling series.

He’s topped The NY Times bestsellers list, had his books turned into movies and TV shoes and the list goes on.

For years I thought he was Australian (no idea why) and liked him even more. He’s not, he’s American. But I still like him and his books are just brilliant, even without knowing who he was when he wrote them.

Massive books. Read but good condition. Book 1 is ex libris but still decent.

$5 each plus whatever postage costs.

When Elizabeth Haydon’s first book, Rhapsody, was published, comparisons were made with Jordan, Goodkind and even the great Tolkien.

She created the Symphony of Ages universe and has since written 13 books across a couple of different series’ within that universe.

“Epic fantasy for the third millennium” is how they are described.

Here are the first three. These are trade paperbacks and chunky books at that.

$5 each of course, plus whatever postage costs.

Well these are a bit special. They rarely pop up and never for this price. But here they are in all of their fantastical glory at a highly accessible $5 each.

John Norman’s Gorean Saga spans 60 years of writing. The first 25 books were written between 1966 and 1988, which is the era these books here are from. Then after a 20 year hiatus, Norman started again with another 13 books, one scheduled for publication this year. He’s 93 years old now!

The artwork is amazing, but let’s all admit it, of its time.

Condition is a mixed bag but happy to send more pics if you need them. Get your dibs in quick, these won’t hang around.

$5 a book as always, plus postage for what it costs. I’ll try and track at the top here what’s sold already. Forgive me if I can’t keep up!

The Book of Man Trilogy is the third series written by much loved author of the Runespell books, Jane Welch, and it’s set in the same universe.

These don’t appear too often and they’re in great shape.

Also have the original Runespell Trilogy available if anyone’s looking for it.

Here’s another Dragonlance bunch! If you’re looking for pristine copies these aren’t for you. Most are decent condition but for some yellowing and the odd crease on the spine. Some better than that, some a little worse.

These come in often and go fast so comment here or DM me with what you want. I’ll post a few each day over the next week, and I’ll be sure to go through comments to find first dibs etc. Please check pics carefully for condition to make sure they match what you’re after.

Arthur C Clarke, one of the granddaddies of SF, has inspired so many authors over the last few decades. So many of his books are considered classics.

Here are a bunch of really old ones from him, from the late 60s to late 80s. These oldies are getting harder and harder to find. The condition varies greatly so make sure you check the photos carefully, but as always, $5 each plus postage for whatever it costs.

Here’s a couple of fantasy books for the hardcover collector. 2 x Charles de Lint 1st editions in nice condition.

We don’t talk enough about de Lint. He’s a real master of modern fantasy, evidenced by the fact he’s won the World Fantasy, Aurora, Sunburst, and White Pine awards, among loads of others.

Nice copies for the hardcover collector, especially at this price. Yes, $5 each as always, plus postage for whatever it costs.

Something a little different tonight. Many of us fantasy / sci-fi fans might have started off reading these. Here we have 6 x Choose Your Own Adventure books, all old, most from the 80s (yes that means 40 years old!!).

They’re in decent condition considering their age, except for the faded spines as pictured - still, at $5 each they’re a bargain as these oldies tend to sell for heaps more.

As always, postage at whatever it costs or pick up available in Perth.

One of the most significant writers ever in science fiction and fantasy, Anne McCaffrey was the first woman to win the Hugo and Nebula awards, and her 1978 novel The White Dragon was the first science-fiction novel to appear on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list.

A master world-builder, she published around a hundred books, she’s inspired countless authors whose work we read today, and her legacy is continued by her son Todd.

Here’s the smallest number of her books. A few random paperbacks to help the McCaffrey fan complete their set.

$5 each as usual, plus postage at whatever it costs.

Mike Jefferies writes screenplays in Hollywood. In his spare time he writes fantasy. I’m guessing he doesn’t have much spare time though, after writing around 15 crackers over a 13 year stint, he published his most recent one in 1999.

He sure has a following though. Here’s a selection of his books, including the first 3 books of his awarded Loremasters of Elundium series, plus a couple of standalones.

Brian Wilson Aldiss is known to have been one of the most important voices in science fiction. Publishing his first book in 1954, he became a Grand Master of Science Fiction in 1999 and in between won a Hugo, a Nebula, two BSFAs and a Campbell award among many others.

Many of his awards were for his most celebrated works, the Helliconia Trilogy.

I have two sets of these available. The well read but have plenty of page turning left in them.

As always, $5 a book makes the trilogy $15, plus postage (or pick up in Perth).

Here’s the Axis trilogy, the first series written by Australian legend Sara Douglass. A brilliant debut trilogy that saw success around the world. Weirdly in the US, book 1 Battleaxe was called The Wayfarer Redemption.

In the 15 short years she was actively writing before she passed away too young, she left us almost 20 amazing works of fantasy fiction. These 3 are her best IMO.

Neal Stephenson seems to fly under the radar, which is a shame, because as a sci-fi / fantasy writer he’s right up there for me. It might be better to call many of his books speculative fiction given the alternative histories he presents.

Here we have the complete Baroque Cycle trilogy along with two standalone novels. All are hefty books.

Take one or take them all, either way it’s $5 a book as always, plus postage (or pick up in Perth). PayPal preferred.

Here’s a stash of books that I’ve rarely come across in the wild: the Starfist series by David Sherman and Dan Cragg is epic.

They’re military science fiction novels set in the 25th century. Both authors are ex US Army, so they know what they’re on about and are able to give a sense of realism to their writing.

Fast-paced and action-packed to say the least, I have here the vast majority of a complete set. 10 paperbacks and a hardcover should keep you busy for a while.

As always, $5 a book makes this stash $55, plus postage if required (or pick up in Perth). PayPal preferred.

New York Times #1 Bestselling author, Australia’s own Sean Williams teams up with his best writing buddy Shane Dix for the Orphans trilogy.

“In the early 22nd century, humans' electronic reproductions, known as engrams, have been sent on fact-finding missions throughout the known universe-searching for signs of alien life.
But what they find exceeds their wildest dreams-in nightmarish proportions.”

These guys have written a tonne of books together, and you can tell. Always entertaining, they’re great at character building and there’s no doubt they’re Australian when you read their books.

Used but good condition as pictured. Like always, $5 a book, so $15 the set, plus postage if required (or pick up in Perth). PayPal preferred.

John Scalzi’s books are fun. His witty humour, even with the serious bits, makes his writing style easy and enjoyable.

Here are the first 2 books in the military science fiction Old Man’s War series, the ones that out him on the map as an author.

An excellent series to try out if you’ve never read Scalzi before.

Ken MacLeod’s books have won the Prometheus Award and the BSFA award, and been shortlisted for the Hugo and Nebula Awards.

The Fall Revolution is one of his most celebrated series’. It’s a four book epic but the entire series is captured here in these two books - each containing two of the novels.

Sean Williams is a writer gifted at character building. I really enjoy the way he uses them to draw you in, no matter whether they’re good or bad. But maybe the thing I like most about his writing is how he weaves little Australianisms into his writing - the things that would only stand out to you if you lived here.

This is a really enjoyable series by a great Aussie talent.

As always, $5 a book, so $15 total plus postage if required (or pick up in Perth). PayPal preferred.

Now for some true classics of the epic fantasy style. Bound to tug on the nostalgia strings of a few of you.

Terry Brooks is now 80 years of age and he’s just released his 50-somethingth book. The vast majority of those books have been set in the world of Shannara.

Here’s the first 3! A Tolkien-esque (to a fault) adventure for the fantasy fan.

$5 a book, $15 total plus postage if required (or pick up in Perth). PayPal preferred.

Used but good condition as pictured.

Photos from Five Buck Fantasy Sci-fi Australia's post 20/05/2024

What a cracker this book is. Critically acclaimed and a true modern classic IMO. China Mieville is extraordinarily imaginative and inventive.

“Beneath the towering bleached ribs of a dead, ancient beast lies the city of New Crobuzon, where the unsavory deal is stranger to no one--not even to Isaac, a gifted and eccentric scientist who has spent a lifetime quietly carrying out his unique research. But when a half-bird, half-human creature known as the Garuda comes to him from afar, Isaac is faced with challenges he has never before encountered. Though the Garuda's request is scientifically daunting, Isaac is sparked by his own curiosity and an uncanny reverence for this curious stranger. Soon an eerie metamorphosis will occur that will permeate every fiber of New Crobuzon--and not even the Ambassador of Hell will challenge the malignant terror it evokes.”

A well-read paperback with signs of wear. Still plenty of reading left in it.

$5 fantasy at its best. $11 postage, or pickup if you’re in Perth. Or of course, add it to your pile and combine with other books before shipping.

PayPal preferred.

Today I’ve got the first 3 books in the highly rated Cassandra Kresnov series.

Joel Shepherd is an annoyingly talented Aussie author of fantasy and science fiction, who at the age of 39, has already written 21 books!! He wrote these in his early 30s.

“Cassandra Kresnov is an artificial person, or android, created by the League, one side of an interstellar war against the more powerful, conservative Federation. Cassandra is an experimental design - more intelligent, more creative, and far more dangerous than any that have preceded her. But with her intellect come questions, and a moral awakening. She deserts the League and heads incognito into the space of her former enemy, the Federation, in search of a new life. As she struggles for her place and survival in a new world, Cassandra must forge new friendships with old enemies, while attempting to confront the most disturbing and deadly realities of her own existence.”

5 bucks a book - so $15 for this lot, plus $15 shipping (they’re chunky) or pickup available in Perth. PayPal preferred.

Nice condition as pictured.

Fiona McIntosh’s first trilogy, published between 2001 and 2002.

“Deep in the folklore of Tallinor lies a dark legend of betrayal and destruction. It is the story of a powerful sentient called Orlac who almost destroyed the entire land. Even now, many centuries later, any sentient who is discovered is subjected to the barbaric practice of bridling and branding. But in a village far from the royal city a young scribe, Torkyn Gynt, blazes with untold power and healing abilities which go undetected. Tor agrees to be apprenticed to the Royal Physic Merkhud and with that decision tor takes the first step towards his destiny. Armed with only his wits and a pouch of mysterious stones given to him by his parents, Tor must trust in the falcon Cloot and in Lys, the mysterious dreamspeaker, to guide him on a journey that will test his courage and his heart.”

$15 for the trilogy, plus $15 shipping (or pickup available in Perth).

Used paperbacks but good condition as pictured.
