FAQ: My slam poem is longer than two minutes. Does it really matter if I go over time?

ANSWER: Ummm, so yes, one of the major rules of a poetry slam is the time limit restriction.

At Perth Slam (and the Australian Poetry Slam) poems must be limited to two minutes or under.

Having said that, you could indeed go over time. If you really think that your poetry is so damn good that you, and you alone, must defy the point of a timed slam...

Then be that guy!

Like, nobody is gonna drag you off the stage or anything.

But to be fair and equitable to everyone in the room, especially your fellow contenders, we do encourage each poet to stick to the time limit rule.

At the very least, so we can fit everyone who signs up, into the very tight schedule our venue places on us.

Plus, it's a competitive performance event, and you'll lose points for every 30 seconds you go over the two minute limit.

You may miss out on the prize of ALL THE MONEY (often over $300).

It does happen. A lot. The best poem of the day loses by a point because the poet went over by a second or two! So sad. But so avoidable.

Also, as it's a fundamental part of slam poetry convention, the audience actually expects a two minute poem.

Indeed, as the warning bell sounds at one-minute and fifty seconds, and a poem meanders over the two minute mark, you can feel the audience really start to lose interest.

It's definitely palpable in a packed slam room.

Further, we really are restricted to a very tight schedule with our venue, with bands needing to load in as we exit the venue.

We barely have time to count up the scores and announce the winner!

So yeah, we simply encourage you to either: trim your piece to fit into the two-minute box, write a new shorter piece - or just do another poem that does fit!

Yeah! Just write more poems folks! That's the point.
