This July, we witnessed a historic passage through Australia’s 47th Parliament – the legislated end date for live sheep export! 🐑🎉
The evidence has told us time and time again that live sheep export is unfixable.
The economic data has consistently told us that it is unnecessary.
The Australian community decided a long time ago that it is unacceptable.
And now, Australia’s 47th Parliament has decided that it will be unlawful from May 1, 2028.
While May 2028 is still years away, Australian sheep will no longer be subjected to long-haul journeys that compromise their welfare and scientifically put them at great risk of suffering.
We're incredibly grateful to the MPs and Senators who supported this bill. And to you, whether you’ve signed a petition, written to a politician or spoken out for an end to the trade, thank you for your ongoing support in making sure this important reform happens!
Now it’s up to the government, industry, and animal welfare sector to accept the decision and collectively work towards a better future for Australian sheep.

MKC is reaching out for your help with little polly, a tiny baby rescue in progress...
Little Polly, a tiny warrior with a heart full of courage, needs your help! She arrived in our care weighing a mere 240 grams—far below the healthy weight for her age (approximately 6 weeks old). Despite her fragile state, Polly has already overcome tremendous challenges:
Worms: Polly battled a tummy full of worms
Diarrhea: She fought against severe diarrhea.
Malnutrition: Polly’s little body endured malnutrition.
Loss: Tragically, she lost her brother who died during the rescue.
Wed have the team on her right now, working to ensure her safety, but if you can help she is a tax deductible life saving chance right here.

The WIRES and ARC collaboration is the largest of its type in the world, with thousands of crafters, animal rescuers and volunteers supporting rescue in the field.
With the scale and importance of the Australian wildlife sector the best work is done when people work together. There are hundreds of animal rescuers in Australia. They also work closely with WIRES, ARC and each other on projects (and some very large with WIRES directly) to save more animals.
Without that collaboration, the clock winds back to a time when there was nothing more than a lot of good people working hard with less opportunity. A lot of people were around before the 2020 bushfires, and will recall what it was like before programs like the WIRES grants and food support programs, ARC and Petbarn Foundation food programs and many others existed.
Four years later and funding programs continue to be deployed that will have a long-term sustainable benefits for animals and rescue.
WIRES is the largest donor to Wildlife rescue groups in Australia, this is an undisputed fact. Tens of millions have been assigned and spent in programs in every state, growing on capability and capacity.
Some of those grant recipients are listed here

Similarly, when there are emergencies there is a WIRES person quietly in the background securing support for the rescuers in the sector.
The ARC Craft Guild work with WIRES is at the forefront of this. Every Wildlife rescuer is helped with items that support their animals and you can’t exactly go buy them off the shelf.
The Animal Rescue Cooperative Craft Guild is thousands of knitters, makers, sewers and specialist designers constantly responding to requests for rescuers around Australia. WIRES in this past month has put up large requests to support independent Bat rescuers in other states, and supported this work with funding for the core team.
The Craft Guild is a machine, and at the core is people and they love what they do and the animals it helps.
WIRES team members (as well as members of other key Wildlife groups) are part of the core ARC teams. We cross pollinate ideas, share issues and support each others work.
If you go to an ARC shed, you are going to see Wildlife carers helping support Companion Animals. You are also going to see Companion Animal support going to Wildlife Carers as part of the offset programs.
In Tasmania, WIRES is providing full-time staff, rescue, vans, phone services, training, and many other initiatives to help the state. They have done that without a lot of fanfare and without setting up a local branch.
They basically just offered to help. ARC is of course right there with many other carers alongside that work helping.
We often get asked why is the collaboration so important? Simple. If you aren’t in dialog with the key partners, you are not reaching the full potential you, your animals and your volunteers need.
All of us rescue animals. The leadership, members and branches at WIRES also rescue animals, thousands of members and decades of experience. There is nowhere else in the world where those systems exists. When someone sees a WIRES logo on a hub or on an email it means quality.
The systems they bring are scaled out and capable. Quality training, systems, processes and hundreds of animals in direct care. They bring credibility to anyone they work with. This partnership is one ARC and many other organizations look forward to growing into. the new year and many more rescues to come.
We are grateful to all the organisations, volunteers and carers that are, like us, working hard over the break to save animals in this busy emergency season. (Flood, Fire . . Hail, Cyclones . . what next . . . )
