Neal's Yard Dairy Penny's Cheese Shop Omnom Cheese Making Meredith Dairy

Join us in celebrating two iconic cheesemakers: Dora Saker and Edith Cannon.

Dora Saker (1888-1926) spent her career teaching others how to make Cheddar. Her 1917 book, Practical Cheddar Cheese-making, details a method of strict cleanliness and precise measurement. This method was not reserved for mass production. Rather, Saker believed small-scale producers could fine-tune their processes to make the best cheese. Over a century later, Cheddar-makers still refer to her writing for inspiration.

Edith Cannon (1868-1963) started making cheese at age 12; at 19, her Cheddar won the Frome Cheese Show; by 21, she was teaching “the Cannon Method” to students eager to replicate her success. Her achievements drew the attention of chemist F.J. Lloyd, who recruited her in his quest to use scientific measurement in Cheddar-making. He was immediately impressed by her ability to make cheese by instinct. Decades later, she was still using those instincts to make Cheddar.

Inspired by their legacy, Neal’s Yard Dairy's own Georgia Hollands and Harry Darby created this limited-edition linocut design. You can purchase a print at any of our shops or online at this link: https://www.nealsyarddairy.co.uk/collections/all/products/neals-yard-dairy-women-in-cheese-print
