Supporting NSW Aboriginal Communities in the reclamation and growth of Aboriginal Languages

Photos from Aboriginal Languages Trust's post 19/07/2024

Aboriginal Language revitalisation describes the sovereign work of Communities’ efforts to reawaken, revive and strengthen Aboriginal Languages for Mob today and for our future generations to come.

Since colonisation Aboriginal Communities have led sustained efforts to protect, strengthen, care for and pass on Languages, Knowledges and Cultures, despite facing systemic barriers such as policies that restricted Mob from speaking their Languages.

NSW is the only jurisdiction with legislation that acknowledges the significance of First Languages and provides a framework to support Language revitalisation.
The Aboriginal Languages Trust supports Communities leading revitalisation work in NSW, through grants, research and advocacy.

On behalf of the Trust’s staff and Board, we wish to pay tribute to the incredible life of Aunty Beryl Carmichael, an Elder of the Ngiyampaa People from the desert town of Menindee.

Aunty Beryl was a pivotal advocate for the protection of Culture and Heritage and worked tirelessly to ensure the Language and knowledge of her people were passed down through generations.

In 2022 the Trust recognised and celebrated Aunty Beryl’s enormous contribution to Language revitalisation with the Aboriginal Languages Trust Lifetime Contribution to Languages award.

The knowledge and education Aunty Beryl shared over the years have profoundly impacted all who knew her.

Aunty Beryl reminds us to connect with each other through Culture and Country, leaving us with these beautiful words:

"Language is the soul of this Nation. Everything is connected and Language is the way we find those connections".

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Aunty Beryl's family and Community during this time.

Rest easy Aunty Beryl

Today we observe and celebrate the United Nations International Mother Language Day.

On 16 May 2007 the United Nations General Assembly called upon Member States "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world". By the same resolution, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages.

Today there is growing awareness of the vital role that Languages play in development, in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage.

We acknowledge and recognise the deadly work of Community and the continuous efforts to reclaim and revitalise Language.
