Our Elder in Residence, Aunty Lyn Martin, held a talk with two artists, Koreena Leverett and Mr Rhodes, sharing with them stories about the history of the local area, Darug culture and her own story of connecting with Bankstown and her Darug heritage 📖
We commissioned Koreena and Mr Rhodes to create artwork responding to Aunty Lyn’s stories 📝
We invite you to listen to Aunty Lyn’s story, experience Koreena and Mr Rhodes’ artworks, and make your own artwork that responds to the story 🖼️
With Aunty Lyn, we’ve created a worksheet that will help guide you in thinking about the story and how it relates to your family and your connection with Bankstown 🏠

A little about our facilitator Nicole Issa:
Nicole Issa’s music gives you the hug you need after a breakup. The essence of a gentle friend that gives you space to mourn and the energy to heal and keep going.
Hailing from Sydney’s South-West, the Indie-pop artist and songwriter is a masterful storyteller through music. With a seamless blend of heartfelt lyrics and captivating melodies, providing a sonic journey through the emotional landscapes of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. Her new track “Are You Really Worth It”, a collaboration with JËVA is out now and has already received glowing recognition, receiving a play on BBC Radio 1’s ‘Future Pop show’.
Recently Nicole has been making her mark in the song-writing circuit being a part of APRA AMCOS’ SONGHUBS at SOUND WEST (Curated by L-FRESH the LION), Co-Writing Mr Rhodes “Every Part of Me” Which featured on Triple J and and Co-Writing ‘Mess You Made’ by Isadora which made viral waves on TikTok.

‘Stories From Here: An Audio Tour Of Bankstown’ is the first of its kind in Western Sydney 🔈
Outloud has been engaging with local young people who were mentored by acclaimed local author through a series of workshops 📝
With dramaturgical support by our artistic director + CEO Finn O’Branagáin 🎭
And then recorded young people’s stories in partnership with from 🎙️

They will be bringing their stories into a fun, virtual and introspective tour, as you scan QR codes that will be placed around locations in Bankstown 📍

We are so excited to launch ‘Stories From Here’ which is an audio walking tour of Bankstown, with recorded monologues written by local youth that share and celebrate their diversity and experiences in the area 🏘️
Presented by Outloud, participating writers and performers have been mentored by published local author , director-dramaturg Finn Ó Branagáin, and recording partner from 🌟
Join us as we celebrate the launch of ‘Stories From Here’, where you will be guided through a FREE audio tour by our young writers ✍️

Supported by and , we welcome artists and creatives who reside in or have connections to the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA or greater Western Sydney area to be part of our joint initiative, the dyanmila* Studio Space 🍃
dyanmila is a Dharug word meaning play 🌬️
With an offer of 3-week access to a rent-free space, the dyanmila Studio is ideal for someone (or a duo or small collective) who wants to develop a new project or body of work and would like a dedicated space in a supportive environment with feedback from leaders in the industry. There is no expectation for an outcome for this residency.
We’re looking for creative practitioners with a desk-based practice in any discipline, including visual artists, sound designers, writers, editors, filmmakers, community producers, directors, etc. 🎨🎹📝🎞️🎭
Artists with diverse and intersectional lived experiences are encouraged to apply❗
The dyanmila Studio Space residency offers:
🌿3 weeks of rent-free space at Bankstown Arts Centre in a room furnished with a desk and chair with lots of natural light
🌿Weekly 1-hour one-on-one mentorship with either Outloud or Utp staff
🌿There will be an opportunity to share your work with internal staff
🌿Wi-fi
🌿Access to a computer and printer/photocopier

🌿Access to space from 10am – 4pm, Monday to Saturday (Arts Centre is closed on Mondays, but Outloud and Utp staff will be in)

Join the New York based artist for ‘Defanging The Snake: Psychic Self-Defence and Improvised Weaponry in Filipino Martial Arts’ on Thursday 21 March. The evening workshop will explore the potential of establishing one’s own martial-spiritual connection by adopting practices from Indigenous Filipino Martial Arts
Prioritising the unification of mind, body, and spirit as one functioning unit for protection and consolation, participants will design personalised weapons (through guided movement and drawing) and imbue them with the power of prayer, also known as Orasyon (through collaborative writing) ✍️
