Gluten. Really, what's the deal? Should any surfer actually care about this?
Are we just freaking out about nothing, or is gluten going to be like the asbestos of nutrition 40 years from now...
( a good idea on paper that actually was horribly wrong)?
Well.... Yes. There are some things you should know - we've covered them in this week's edition of the Soul Surf Strength Blog. Check it out below!
https://www.soulsurfstrength.com/blog/gluten-is-the-fear-legit-and-can-it-limit-your-performance
Ever heard someone say "Once you get to be XYZ years old, your knees/back/neck just don't work the same way they used to"...
Or "Enjoy it while you can?"
Rubbish, we say. Age is NO EXCUSE to lose your strength, performance or skills.
If you want to be surfing even BETTER when you're 80 than you can today, read this blog.
It's your chassis - bang it around, let it get rusty and it won't last long. Take good care of it and it'll work FOREVER.
https://www.soulsurfstrength.com/blog/age-is-no-excuse
AGE is NO excuse A little bit of inspiration for you. Laird is absolute elite when it comes to surfing big waves and he is certainly not young. The one thing he does is look after himself very well. He has done a lot of personal work with Paul Chek and implements what he was taught.
SITUPS! CRUNCHES! PLANKING! Etc.
Standard core conditioning for most people - but check out the photo below of Mick Fanning.
Would YOU say he's crunching his spine, or is he twisting it?
MOST of what surfers do in the water is rotational, not bending the spine forwards and backwards.
If you're doing situps, crunches and planking in the gym, take 5 minutes to watch this video blog about how to make your core workouts more effective for your performance in the water.
KEEP MOVING KEEP SURFING!
https://www.soulsurfstrength.com/blog/surf-specific-core-training
Surf Specific Core Training The core is possibly the most mis-understood aspect of physical exercise, while the desire for the famous 6 pack is at it's most prevalent, the question of how to get it still seems very confusing. What i'm going to do here is give you some exercises that will not only given you greater aesthetics…
Your spine.
Pretty important if you're a surfer, don't you agree?
Let me ask you this - if I told you that the single most important foundation for the strength of your back is HOW YOU BREATHE (and also the best way to predict - or correct - back pain) would you believe me?
Check this out in this week's Soul Surf Strength blog!
https://www.soulsurfstrength.com/blog/breathing-back-pain
Breathing & Back Pain How many people experience back pain throughout their lives? Around 80% I think. To me, that is far too many. I'm sharing this video with you to give you a little insight into what may be happening with your back pain if you haven't been getting the results you desire.

Specific Stretches for Surfers: When, how and WHY to stretch - all answered below.
Video Correction. Lower back into extension not pelvis:
Quick little video on the 3 most common stretches I have my clients needing to do. You could call these sport specific stretches as it is these 3 muscles I find need most attention with surfers.
When is the ideal to time stretch? Simple answer, when the muscles feel tight. You don't want to go stretching muscles that are not tight as this can lead to or exacerbate muscle imbalances quite easy. While flexibility is great there needs to be a balance of flexibility and stability of all joints. This will help limit injuries and keep you in the water longer. Think of it like this, stretch what is tight - strengthen what is weak.
How: As shown in video. Please do not do the lower back stretch if have back problems. Get checked out by a professional and get help to stabilise the area and build strength. Start with stretches that are highest on your body, reason being is they have more proprioception and will have greater influence on the lower half of your body.
WHY: Should be reasonably obvious really. If you want to give your self the best chance to surf at your potential, not feel stiff and not give yourself greater chances of injury then stretching is a must. As explained above, only stretch the muscles that are tight.
Any questions fire away, give these a go after you surf and let us know how you get on.
