Visiting me at Carina Eye Care is unlike most optometry visits. You'll simply get me for every step

Hello everyone!
Hope that you have all been well 😊 and enjoying the start of Spring! Just wanted to update this page to let you know that I have been transitioning back from maternity leave. My available times vary quite a bit as I'm trying to balance my time with baby Amelie, as well as accommodate patients whenever possible. So, I am available! But, be warned that there may be a baby lurking in the background who I may need to tend to. The best way to book an appointment is to head to www.carinaeyecare.com.au and click on the "Book Now" link. If you have difficulty finding an appropriate time, do get in touch and I'll try my best to accommodate you. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Best wishes,
Carina

A child with 1 myopic parent is at 3x the risk of myopia when compared to a child with no myopic parents. Meanwhile, having two myopic parents increases that risk to 6x.

Whilst we cannot control whose parents our children get, we can definitely control their environment. The best way to reduce risk of myopia is increased outdoor time!

Thank you everyone for your generosity especially these past few months. Baby and I have been showered with so much love from you wonderful patients - so many words of wisdom, good wishes, baby clothes, toys, wraps, and more kindness than I could have ever imagined 🥰

I won't be taking on any new patients in the next few days as this is my last week before maternity leave. However, I will continue my duties this week for:
• Existing booked appointments will go ahead
• Collection appointments and follow ups are still welcome to tie up loose ends (pick up your glasses / contact lenses / planned review appointments / urgent appointments for existing patients)
• Last minute contact lens orders
• Glasses repairs

While I'm on maternity leave (10th April until some time in July):
• Feel free to contact me by email (but please be patient, I'm not sure how quickly I will respond - and I'll also have an auto-reply message with my recommended colleagues)
• I will try to be available for urgent contact lens / spectacle orders

Thank you so much for your support and understanding,
❤️ Carina

Standard glasses are not the answer for your child if they are myopic, especially if they are under the age of 13. There are much better options for your child that can protect their eyes.

How long is your eyeball? This is much more important if you are myopic (short-sighted). The length of your eyeball has a relationship to your risk of potentially blinding eye diseases and dictates what type of eye examinations are necessary to proactively detect these conditions.

26mm is the number that makes a big difference to your risk of visual impairment that cannot be corrected by spectacles.

What risk does YOU being short-sighted / myopic pose to your children?

If both parents are highly myopic, then this may result in FASTER myopia progression in your child.

We can’t change our genetics, but the good news is that there are evidence-based ways that we can reduce the chance of our kids eyes becoming myopic, or slowing down their progression of myopia.

Are you an adult with Myopia? (Short-sightedness / wearing glasses to see things clear in the distance) Remember that your eyeballs are still considered myopic even if you’ve had refractive surgery such as LASIK / LASER / ASLA etc.

Here’s a checklist to show how you can look after your eye health better. Being myopic increases your risk of several eye diseases. Regular monitoring can go a long way in detecting the early starts of potentially blinding eye conditions. However, you do need to make sure that the optometrist that you visit has the right equipment to do this.

Don’t let your kids hold their screens or books too close!

Remember when your parents back in the day told you to correct your posture when reading? There’s some truth to this. Ensuring that viewing distance is at least elbow-to-hand distance away is important in reducing the chance of your child’s eyes developing myopia.

My Advice: Minimum distance Harmon's Distance, but the further away, the better

Less SCREEN TIME is a great way to reduce the chance of your child’s eyes becoming myopic.

Restrict screen time for kids whenever practical. I know it can be a really tough one, but I’ve witnessed parents do amazing things with restricting screen time! Bush walks, going to the beach, and playing at the park are just a few. These are just guidelines if you’re not sure what is considered appropriate.

My Advice: Less than 2 hrs of leisure screen time a day, and a break every 20min for 20sec

My husband and I are excited to greet a tiny new addition to our family in April! I plan to take maternity leave between Mid-April and Mid-July 2022. I look forward to resuming work after having some time off to physically recover and care for my new baby - but I’ll keep you posted if I do decide to come back sooner.

As you know, I always strive to do the best that I can for my patients. To ensure that your eye care needs are met, please book an appointment with myself before 15th April. As you may know, the best way to book is online www.carinaeyecare.com.au.

I will be in touch with you soon if you’re due for your review during the time that I’m away to see whether you’d like to bring it forward, or delay it until my return.

While I’m on leave, I have a couple of local optometrist colleagues who can look after you if you have any urgent needs and will send through these details closer to the date.

My plan is to be contactable in a limited capacity during this time that I’m away by SMS/WhatsApp/email. Hopefully, I’ll still be able to service any urgent repairs/replacements for glasses/contact lenses, and answer any urgent questions. However, this is my first baby, and I’m not exactly sure what to expect, so I appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

SMS / WhatsApp: 0423 590 959
Email: [email protected]

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thank you again for all your support and I look forward to seeing you soon.

P.S. I’m leaning on my new work baby machine right there. Have recently invested in my wonderful OCT machine to enable me to take even better care of my patients!

More OUTDOOR TIME is a great way to reduce the chance of your child’s eyes becoming myopic.

The research has looked at 90 minutes of outdoor time per day, so my recommendation is at least 2 hours a day to be safe. Remember to team this up with quality sunglasses and a hat. Your child’s eyes will get enough bright light even through their sunglasses.

Wishing all my patients, clients, referring GPs and optometrists, suppliers, friends, colleagues and of course my ridiculously supportive family a wonderful 2022 🌸 May you all be safe, healthy, and have a fulfilling year ahead 💥🙏

Many simply want to put 2021 behind them and I can definitely understand why. However, I'd also like to thank you all for 2021 ❤️ As difficult as parts of it have been, I am so grateful that my work has been a way for me to continue contributing to the wider community 💖 in a small way throughout the whole year. Thank you for allowing me to do that, and feel that little bit of purpose in what I do each and every day.

Last year was extra difficult when I was in between jobs during lockdown, and my sometimes catastrophic mind 🤯 led me to believe that perhaps I may never be able to work as an optometrist again thanks to COVID 🦠 Thankfully, NSW came out of lockdown in May 2020 allowing me to establish Carina Eye Care as a full time optometry service. I have been fortunate to have had much support from life and business coach Annie Gibbins in 2020, along with support from many colleagues in the optometry industry 🤓 (you know who you are!), and the local GP network 🩺 . You have all played a crucial role in allowing me to choose this path of self-employment and service to the community 🌎

Thank you to all my lovely patients who have spoilt me this Christmas! 🎄 Never have I received so many goodies before! You are all a joy to look after. A special thanks to the little boy and girl who were super keen to find out when I was going to open my present, suggesting Christmas Day would be a good idea. I'm not one huge on gifts, so this was my one and only saved for this morning 🥰 My favourite part is the drawing of checking Santa's eyes! 🎅 Merry Christmas, everyone! 💖

Merry Christmas!! Thank you so much for a wonderful year! It's been so great to be able to serve the community for a second full year at Carina Eye Care. Thank you for the opportunity to look after your eyes, and for supporting me. Wishing you all a beautiful time with loved ones this festive season :)

There are a few things that happen around your 40s.... One thing that happens is called presbyopia, if it didn't happen to you, then it would be abnormal. The natural lenses inside everyone's eyes slowly stiffens throughout our lives and they simply get to the point where they won't flex like they used to in order for you to read comfortably at small print at close distances.

In fact, from around age 40 onwards, it’s common to experience a few changes in your vision. Read on here https://goodvisionforlife.com.au/2021/11/12/managing-your-eye-health-as-you-age/

Ever wondered what screens are doing to your teenager's eyes? One thing that might be happening is causing their eyes to dry out. Traditionally, dry eyes were mainly noted in an older population, but it's now becoming much more prevalent in young ones too!

It's been a while since my last post thanks to the lockdown. I'm so grateful for what appears to be returned normality in NSW at the moment, and it's been lovely seeing more patients again.

Carina Eye Care is open for routine eye care, although those without double vaccinations will require a COVID negative test within 72 hours of their appointment.

A study has shown that maternal diabetes (type 1, type 2, or gestational) during or before pregnancy, may be related to a 39% increased chance of your child developing a high refractive error (needing glasses). This effect was more pronounced when the maternal diabetes was poorly controlled. If you had diabetes during pregnancy, it's important to make sure that your child gets their eyes checked.

Eye Tips 4 Kids 👀👧👦

Here's a great infographic from Myopia Profile to help families remember what they can do to look after their eyes. Don't forget your hat and sunnies too! 🧢🕶️

🌞 Spend at least 90 minutes a day outdoors while being sun smart
🕒 Every 20 minutes, take a break for 20 seconds
🤦 Keep forearm distance between eyes and book/screen
📱 Less than 2 hours screen time after school and don't sit for too long

Fun Fact! 😄
📚 🎵 A new study has found that patients who listened to music before cataract surgery had fewer hypertensive events during cataract surgery than patients who did not listen to music beforehand. Therefore, potentially reducing the chance of complications during surgery!
