A big weekend at the ESA, with multiple events and courses taking place. Over 125 emergency service workers were on site on Saturday!

NSW SES Members and other agencies from around the country attend the Animal Emergency Incident Management Network (AEIMN) Conference alongside NSW Department of Primary Industries and Local Land Services NSW at the Acadrmy over the weekend.

Participants learned from the best animal rescue experts in the field. They demonstrated how to safely rescue large animals such as horses, cattle and even camels, including lifting a horse onto a rescue boat in flood water. 🐎🚣‍♀️

At the same time, 8 stations were competing high rise fire scenarios, with FRNSW, RFS and even RAAF firefighters participating in the multi agency drills. The next day the local zone hosted a relay pumping drill around the perimeter of the site.

We also completed the last 2 days of a Retained Oncall Program, congratulations to the newest members of the FRNSW family!

It brought a smile to the face of a young fellow going through such a hard time.
Thanks for visiting, Louis.

Last week the Turkish community provided a "thank you" dinner at the Academy warehouse, in recognition of the USAR team that deployed to assist after the recent earthquake.

Our eternal thanks to those amazing food vendors who supported this important event, and to those in the community and FRNSW who arranged it.

We hardly knew that a warehouse could make such an awesome dinner venue!

The Emergency Services Academy was proud to host the Historic Fire Engine Association on Saturday.

During their visit, they deployed Motor Engine 188 - a 1929 Dennis 250 Fire Engine – to a mock fire at our service station training prop.

Running just like it was new, ME 188 and its crew quickly had the situation in hand, much to the delight of all those in attendance.

Today the Hazmat Technician course spent time on, in and around the water for their Shoreline Practical Day.

Scenarios included Containment, Deflection and Protection during HAZMAT incidents using booms, small boats, anchor kits, PFDs and waders.

Although the weather was wet for much of the day, our participants successfully navigated these scenarios, taking to them like ducks to water.

NSW Ambulance Special Operations Team attended the ESA to conduct specialist vertical rescue training. NSWA invited staff from FRNSW and Police Rescue. The two day course covered edge management devices and technical roping skills and patient extrications. All services worked extremely well together. Each service will be passing on the skills and techniques learnt to their own staff at vertical rescue stations during training and exercises.

Yesterday participants on the Hazmat Technician course spent time getting familiar with the range of Hazmat assets within the organisation. This included decontamination caravans and showers, boats and booms, specialised detectors and sprayers, and the scientific officer's van.

This equipment ensures our Hazmat Capability is prepared for anything, anytime, across the State of NSW.

The Natural Disasters and Humanitarian (NDH) section scope of operations is a very broad area of response. Responses to both domestic and International natural disasters has led to the development of an extensive array of equipment that is constantly utilised for varying roles. Here, one of NDH’s large Western Shelters was requested by the Covid-19 Incident Management Team to establish a PCR testing site at the emergency Service Academy at Orchard Hills and at Greenacre. As the Orchard Hills testing site has closed, NDH staff have been busy disinfecting, cleaning and drying (as seen in the photos) the tents to have them ready for the next response request.

This large Western Shelter tent has a footprint of 53m2 It can be insulated, air-conditioned and can be used for different roles such as a crew mess room, rehab /sleeping quarters and can even be outfitted and contacted to other tents to create a field hospital as seen here during the 2019/2020 NSW bushfire emergency. FRNSW Commanders can also request the use of the tents to provide relief to crews on the front line on hot/cold days or at protracted incidents. Just another way FRNSW is Prepared for anything.

A three week HAZMAT Technicians Course is underway at the ESA, being facilitated by the HAZMAT Capability Team (HCT). It’s week one and participants have completed detector, chemistry, and toxicology assessments, attended overseas webinars, and received presentations from partner agencies like the EPA and NSW Police.

They’re also being tested in scenarios that require them to problem solve whilst operating in highly restrictive personal protective equipment. This has included chemical identification, managing and stopping leaks, and protecting the environment from contaminated water flows.

The course participants have also been joined by instructors from ACT Fire & Rescue who hope to enhance their delivery skills and further develop the relationship between the two agencies.
