Afghan Identities in Australia Research Project
Welcome to the information page for Afghan Identities in Australia Research Project. This research is being conducted as part of an independent PhD research project at Western Sydney University. The study is in no way connected to any government department or other organisation. Participation is voluntary and the privacy of participants is an absolute priority.
The study is the first of it’s kind among Australians who identify as having heritage from Afghanistan. You may feel very “Afghan” or “not Afghan” at all. You may be born in Afghanistan, Australia or elsewhere. You may maintain strong ties to other Afghans or avoid them altogether. The intention of the study is to explore ideas of what being Afghan and Australian means in Australia’s current social climate. Some of the themes explored in the study include practices of cultural maintenance, transnational connections, media consumption, social networks, language, identity, views on social issues and experiences of racism.
The study intends to reach as many people as possible in Australia who have heritage from Afghanistan. This includes any year of arrival, all age groups above 18 years of age, all regional and ethnic associations, mixed heritage parentage, and language ability. The online survey is available in English, Dari and Pashto and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. There is also an opportunity to participate in an in-depth interview in English or Dari.
To participate in the study please ensure you meet the following eligibility criteria:
