Western Sydney University engages in world-class tourism, hospitality & events research & training.
This week our Tourism, Hospitality and Events - Western Sydney University Destination Management students completed a field trip with their subject coordinator, Thilakshi Mallawa Arachchi. The students moved their usual classroom setting outdoors, spending some time at Parramatta Quay and Parramatta Square. They shared stories about Parramatta's history—from its pre-colonial agricultural practices and Aboriginal connections to the land, to the transformations in its environmental, cultural and social landscape following colonisation. They also discussed the diverse tourism sectors emerging in what feels like a juxtaposed setting: the lush greenery of the riverbed on one side and the rapid urbanisation on the other. This was a great opportunity for our students to see what they have been learning in the classroom firsthand. Thank you for offering this amazing experience for our students Thilakshi!

Last year when we launched our Bachelor of Tourism and Event Management program, we acknowledged the growing significance of events to tourism and the wider visitor economy. This significance has become glaringly apparent as fever takes over Sydney this week.
Media is reporting that:
🏨 Hotels in Sydney’s CBD are forecast to hit 100% capacity ahead of Taylor Swift’s Sydney concerts.
🏙Rooms in Sydney's CBD and Sydney Olympic Park are predicted to reach maximum capacity, with Greater Sydney hotels expected to reach 90% fullness.
💸Prices for hotel rooms across Sydney are expected to jump 300%.
