Today is World Sepsis Day, an opportunity to increase awareness about the life-threatening condition.

Sepsis is when your body has an extreme response to an infection (also known as blood poisoning). It can affect anyone, however young children, older people and people with chronic illness are most at risk of serious illness.

Infections which can result in sepsis can be anywhere in the body, but are more common in the lungs, bladder and kidneys, skin, throat or gut.
The symptoms of sepsis can include:
• feeling very sick (the worst you have ever felt) or getting very sick, very quickly
• difficulty breathing or breathing very quickly
• not needing to urinate (wee) all day or fewer wet nappies (less wee) than usual in young children or babies
• a new concerning rash or rash that does not fade when you roll a glass over it
• confusion
• blue, grey, pale or blotchy skin
• feeling like your child is very sick.

You know your child best. Trust your instincts if you think something is wrong.

You can lower your risk of sepsis by preventing infection and managing chronic illnesses:
• practising good hygiene, such as regular handwashing and coughing into your elbow and using tissues
• do not share personal items (e.g. razors, toothbrush)
• covering cuts and wounds and ensuring they remain clean
• keeping up to date with routine vaccinations
• taking your usual medicines
• speaking to your doctor regularly if you have conditions such as diabetes, lung disease and kidney disease.
