Podiatry is the study of, diagnosis, treatment and management of foot and lower limb conditions. Podiatrists complete a Bachelor of Applied Science (Podiatry) or Bachelor of Podiatry. To practice in Australia, every Podiatrist must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and have current Senior First Aid certificates. What material should you look for in school shoes?
For formal school shoes look for 100% quality leather as this will support breathability and provide durability.
For sport shoes, cotton, rayon and polypropene are best to ensure breathability.

Wishing you a lovely Christmas. Today is the last day before our annual Christmas shutdown. We look forward to seeing you when we reopen on Tuesday January 2.
If you're thinking about buying your grandkids or niece and nephew school shoes for Christmas - great idea - many foot deformities are caused by poorly fitting footwear and looking after your children’s feet gives them the ideal start for long term foot health.
Here's a few tips for what to look out for.
Fit: there are many good shoe retailers that will offer a measuring and fitting service when buying new shoes. The measurements should be taken whilst the child is standing as feet can increase in size when weight bearing (that goes for adults too!). Shoes should be tried on and tested around the shop. 2-3 minutes of walking around the shop will be enough to determine a good fit. If the foot is slipping out of the shoe or rubs any part of the foot, it will not provide adequate support or comfort.
Support; A slip on shoe will not offer the same support as a show with a Velcro, buckle or lace fastening. Test out the show to see how easily it will bend. A sturdy shoe will provide support in the midfoot but still flex at the ball of the foot.
Quality: price and quality don’t always match. Look for a high quality material with a solid construction. A quality shoe will outlast inferior products, and generally take more abuse in the playground.

A common question we get is “don’t you get sick of feet?”
No - how could we? There's a quarter of the bones in your body just in your feet, and all those bones are held together by ligaments, tendons and muscles, and then we WALK on them… there's almost TOO much that can go wrong!

As members of the Australian Podiatry Association who are all registered with (Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency) we are shocked and saddened.
Last night, 23 October 2023, ABC’s 7.30 program presented a concerning story relating to a podiatrist. The Australian Podiatry Association (APodA) condemns the nature of alleged practices highlighted in this report.
The alleged practices in last night’s news report are not reflective of the exceptional work that podiatrists do to improve the lives of many Australians.
The practitioner mentioned in the news report is not a member of APodA. Whilst APodA cannot comment on specific cases, practitioners who do not participate in accordance with the rules run the risk of penalties, which are determined by the regulators.
APodA works collaboratively with regulators and the various funding schemes to provide regular education and communication in compliance with the rules, as stipulated by the various health fund schemes, which supports our members in providing safe and effective services.
APodA takes great pride in the work of its members who strive to improve the foot health for millions of people in Australia and will continue to support practitioners to deliver exceptional services.
The APodA was not contacted by the ABC in relation to this story.
We're not open today, but will be back tomorrow from 8am. Feel free to leave us a message or voicemail and we'll talk to you Wednesday!
For National Cholesterol Month we’re recognising that fats are an important part of our nutrition – they help make more hormones, make cell walls malleable, and provide us with energy – but too much can mean higher cholesterol readings.
Is your diet really good but your cholesterol is still frustratingly high?
This may indicate that your high cholesterol is genetic. Fats are managed in the body through lots of steps: absorbing them from food, carrying them into the blood stream, storing them in your liver and then distributing them when they’re needed. If just one of these steps doesn’t work correctly, it can mean that blood fats aren’t built up or broken down as they should be, so levels in the blood can rise. It’s worth having your cholesterol checked and talking about your treatment options with your GP.
At for our annual hang out with non breathing Steven
A simple way to effectively reduced your cholesterol is by walking.
Yup – walking.
A Cochrane Review – without getting too nerdy this is the most definitive form of research – showed cholesterol can be reduced by 5-8%. It also showed a reduction in blood pressure, oxygen consumption; and improvements in quality of life and functional capacity.
Just start off with what you can – even if it’s just 15 minutes or parking at the other end of the shopping centre to get your groceries. Each week, slowly challenge yourself by adding in another few minutes until you’re walking for 45 minutes 3 times a week.
Another question from is “don’t you get sick of feet?”
No - there are a quarter of the bones in your body just in your feet. This intricate network is joined by ligaments, tendons and muscles. There's also TOO much that can go wrong!
But we don’t just work on the feet. The feet our foundations and if we're not moving correctly, they may be causing pain in the legs and spine. An assessment of how you walk can help to identify if your feet are causing your shin splints, knee pain or lower back pain.
We use a variety of treatments to manage the cause of the pain, like modifying your footwear or inserts in your shoes, and then prescribe exercises, stretches, and even acupuncture to reduce the pain
We're off the the dentist or optometrist for our annual checks, but your regular foot check if just as important

For today, we're talking about arthritis. Arthritis is another example of an extremely common – yet crippling – disease. You might be surprised to learn that there are many, many different types it affects all ages: from a single worn out joint to inflammatory types that can affect many joints and even your organs. The joint deviations, pain and lack of movement can prevent you from doing simple things like putting shoes on. We aim to help you with padding, shoes and inserts to make you more comfortable and keep you moving

A common question we get is “are those photos on the cigarette packs with the black toes real?”
Yes, they are.
People with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Reynaud’s (and a raft of other chronic conditions) can get the same problems as those smokers get with reduced blood flow to their feet, plus they can also have problems with the feeling in their feet, the indicator that something is wrong. I hear you thinking about those amazing heels you could wear and wondering why numb feet would not be the dream, but pain is an indicator that something is wrong. Think about that tight shoe cutting into you or walking over something, cutting your foot and not knowing it. The cut gets infected, it gets bigger and worse, but you don’t know because you can’t see or feel it, and now there’s a big ulcer (deep wound) on the bottom of your foot. You’re then on a merry-go-round of antibiotics, daily dressings, inserts to offload pressure and footwear changes that may go on for months. In some cases, the issues are so severe this can cause amputation, like the photo on the cigarette packs.
We assess people with circulation and sensation problems every 6 to 12 months to check their blood flow and sensation, and discuss ways to avoid such scenarios
