🎊𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 to BILL TONKIN on his induction into the NON PRO HALL OF FAME!! 👏🤩

Bill Tonkin grew up in Northern NSW surrounded by horses, and was initially involved in the rodeo scene before following his parents’ and sister’s footsteps into the cutting pen. Since that time, he has been a highly successful competitor at aged events and weekend shows with a range of horses he has trained himself, and his passion for the sport continues to grow.

Purchasing a yearling, Yulgilbar Im Flying High at the 2017 NCHA Futurity sale with the plan to train the gelding for the 2019 Futurity, Bill did not look back. Not only did he successfully achieve his goal of showing Yulgilbar Im Flying High at Tamworth, he also showed his family’s highly successful Hall of Fame Inductee Tramps Destiny to many wins at weekend shows that year.

2019 was a stellar year for Bill, with the help of Tramps Destiny he won both the Reserve Champion Rookies title and the $7500 Non Pro title, also enjoying the win at the National Finals in both the Rookies and the $7500 classes. Bill also won the Non Pro BI Derby that year with Yulgilbar Im Flying High. In more recent years, Bill won the National $15,000 Non Pro title in 2022 and the Open Non Pro title in 2023.

“I find that training a horse yourself, and taking them through to be show horses is very rewarding,” says Bill, who is very appreciative of the support he has had from his parents Campbell and Kerri Ann Tonkin. “My parents have been breeding cutting horses for around 15 years, and while I breed horses now too, a lot of the horses that I was able to get going on were bred by my family."

“My sister Amelia Servin has also given me a lot of help, as has Phil Dawson and more recently, Todd Graham. My fiancée Rachel rides with me and helps me every day, turning back and everything else, and she is competing successfully on her horse too. It’s good fun!”

𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 to RYDER YATES on his induction into the NON-PRO HALL OF FAME!!

Introduced to the sport of cutting at a young age, Ryder Yates has progressed from the Junior Youth classes to the Non Pro and Open divisions with much success along the way. This year, after many finals, wins and titles to his name as a Non Pro, Ryder has commenced a new chapter; embarking on a career as a professional cutting horse trainer in Emerald, Queensland.

Winning his first Title – Area 4 Title Junior Youth Champion – before the age of 10, Ryder Yates has grown up in the cutting pen. He describes Bonjovet, the Docs Bon Jovi mare he showed as a youth, as his most memorable cutting horse and now in her late twenties, Bonjovet is still alive and very much part of the Yates family.

Highlights of Ryder’s Non Pro cutting career include winning Reserve Champion at the NCHA Non Pro Futurity in 2022, and being crowned the Novice Non Pro Champion at the 2018 National Finals with a score of 223.5. Other notable accomplishments include 2021 QLD State Title $5000 Novice Champion, 2022 Wild Horse Non-Pro Futurity Champion and Balonne River Cutting Non-Pro Classic Champion in the same year.

“I would like to thank Jason Leitch, who I worked for for two years, for all his help,” Ryder says, as he reflects on his journey and success in the cutting pen to date. “My whole family have also been amazing supporters over the years, including my wife Sarah and now our two young daughters Marlee and Woodie.”

Introduced to cutting by the people that taught her to ride, Alana Tones always wanted to show cutting horses. From a teenager having her first go in the sport, Alana went on to become a professional cutting horse trainer, and now enjoys competing as a Non Pro while balancing her love for the horses and the sport, with business and family commitments.
“The horses are what I enjoy the most about cutting, I really do love the horses! I’ve also met some very good people who have supported me at different stages of the journey,” says Alana as she reflects on her years in the sport.

Alana describes Tail Spinner as being her first good horse, and the one with which she first enjoyed success in the pen, however has been fortunate to ride some wonderful horses over the years.

“I’ve managed to be runner up at most aged events, and I was the first woman to win the Silver Whip up at Toowoomba which was a Champion of Champions,” says Alana as she reflects on her most memorable cutting experiences. “Making the finals of aged events is always a thrill, and I would add that showing in America from 2006 to 2010 was a great experience.”

Today, Alana and her husband Casey Tones run Woodside Cutting Horses in Kilcoy, Queensland, however as Alana is now a Non Pro with two other businesses to run, Woodside is Casey’s focus and Alana finds time to ride and help out with the horses when she can.

“I’m really enjoying being a Non Pro, there is a lot less pressure and I can just enjoy the sport and the horses,” Alana says. “Cutting is still very special to me and there are so many people I’d like to thank for their help over the years, including those I’ve worked for. Todd Graham, Russ and Kylie Benson, John, Roger and Carolyn Wagner, and of course my husband Casey and my parents who have given me a lot of support along the way.”
