‘Hospital in the Home’ provides hospital equivalent care in a person’s home.
After 14 weeks in Cairns Hospital 88-year-old Jim Copp was relieved to be able to finish his hospital care at home.
As a Hospital in the Home patient Jim, and his wife Maggie, were visited by nurses and doctors for three weeks to give him the care, monitoring and treatment that he would have received in a traditional hospital bed.
Registered Nurse Alisa Adlam was one of the first to visit Jim as a patient in his home. “My role was to make sure Jim and Maggie were OK with their medication and to support Jim with his special diet,” said Alisa.
“Patients are much happier at home,” said Alisa. “They are sleeping better, they have their own food and they have all the comforts and familiarity of home. I would choose ‘Hospital in the Home’ for myself.”
Cairns Hospital currently manages up to 30 ‘Hospital in the Home’ patients each day.

📚 Quality nursing is at the heart of Australia's world-class health system, but it is the work of nurse managers that allows for top-notch patient care.
🏥 These often unsung leaders must possess advanced clinical skills, as well as the ability to supervise and support staff and ensure the effective management of highly skilled nursing staff.
💼 An online Master of Nursing can help registered nurses (RNs) develop these essential management skills while retaining a patient-centered approach to care. This can lead to increased job satisfaction and demand in an industry facing nursing shortages.

🙌 Celebrating International Day of Friendship 🫶
Sharing stories from our wonderful JCU: Nursing and Midwifery .
It's International Friendship Day! 💛
Townsville University Hospital nurses Milly and Lily have been best friends since the beginning of their nursing journeys.
"Our families organised a catchup as we were both moving from the Whitsundays to Townsville to study nursing, and we have been inseparable ever since," Milly said.
"It is special to have a best friend, but it's another thing to have someone who deeply understands the work that I do, no one gets a nurse like a nurse," Lily said.
The duo not only finished their studies together, but also backpacked through Europe, have matching necklaces, and have been roommates for years! 🏡
