'ShivaRatri is the Night of Shiva, and for those immersed in the Hindu tradition it is an important part of the year, the one night Shiva ‘sleeps’ while people keep vigil. “Shiva represents the universal power of destruction, which has two facets – the end of physical existence, and the liberation from its subtle bonds (by the destruction of ignorance).

The story of Shiva is the story of God dwelling in human consciousness. He is the Great Yogi, severe and serene in meditation, ever absorbed in superconscious Reality (samadhi). He is the Supreme Guru (spiritual guide) who teaches always in silence the oneness of one’s higher Self (atman) with the ultimate Reality (Brahman).

Shiva is ever the great Destroyer of Ignorance, endowed with infinite compassion, longing only to burn the miseries of the world, to illumine the world, to reveal within each being the highest Truth. The ignorance referred to here is not lack of knowledge of the world, but the ignorance of our true nature.

In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali it is said that this ignorance (avidya) is the cause of all suffering. Avidya is not just an ignorance but a very deep illusion which colours all our perceptions. Because of that, we live in an illusory world of our own creation. The purpose of rituals like ShivaRatri is to shift our focus, quiet our minds and open ourselves to the possibility of the end of ignorance and to awakening to reality.

Remove all the selves we create and what remains will be identified as real Self. Shiva as Mahadeva, the Great God, Lord of Lords, is ever the Destroyer of Ignorance. With his great third eye (the eye of higher knowledge, which looks inward) Shiva pierces through all hypocrisy, and can burn to ashes in a glance all that is untrue. It is said that with each inhalation and exhalation Shiva takes, entire worlds are created and destroyed. He is the inner Self of all living beings.' words and picture from the Shiva tribe

There are a multitude of ways yoga can serve to promote a mother's health & wellbeing in the postpartum period and beyond. These include

- Cultivating life force/ prana/ chi to help replenish the acute and chronic depletion of vital energy lost during birth, breast feeding and from sleepless nights.

- This has the ripple effect of promoting healthy mumma-bubba attachment as well as replenishing vital life force and energy to help breast milk production and combat the all consuming fatigue that can set in with sleepless nights

- Grounding physical, breathing and meditative practices that help activate parasympathetic nervous system. This ripples through to help combat

1) stress
2) fatigue
3) sleep deprivation
4) post natal depression and anxiety

- Increased awareness to help cognitive function despite sleep deprivation

- Increase in physical strength and a sense of personal power to meet the emotional and physical demands unique to motherhood

- Promotes a more intuitive approach to raising humans rather than one that is rooted in fear or outdated generational patterns

The benefits of yoga are all encompassing and can truly be a game changer when it comes to physical, emotional and spiritual health in the crucial postpartum period and throughout motherhood. This not only benefits the mother but obviously child as well. For more support or to attend a postpartum yoga class that helps you cultivate strength and awareness physically and mentally please book at .studio.wagga. The classes are currently donation based so you can try it out and see if it's something that works for you.

The niyamas are a set of observances that we can practice ourselves and are set within the context of yoga.
Amongst these observations is Svadyaya/ study or examining one's self.
This practice is essential to live a life of beauty and to live in harmony within our own thought/ emotional/ physical bodies and with each other.
It is a beautiful practice to seek understanding of our true nature and allow all that is false or untrue to dissipate away.

Meet the Sangha Family

✨🌿 Thakshi from raised2remember

Thakshi was blessed enough to grow up with the practices of yoga and meditation sprinkled throughout the early years of her life. Being born into a family that carries a lineage of sacred practices, she was introduced to aspects of yoga including meditation, mantra and chanting at a young age. Intuitively she felt the purpose of life was to gain wisdom and retain a child like wonderment through life's ebb and flow and hopes to bring that balanced approach to teaching.
Thakshi has travelled to various parts of the world, including the Ecuadorian/ Peruvian Andes to gain a deeper understanding of the healing modalities available to humans. Her experiences working alongside Andean Shamans heavily influences the way she lives, practices and hopes to hold space.
It was only after the birth of her first child when the physical aspect of yoga or asana took on a whole new meaning. Asana became a necessary practice for healing previous birth trauma and for preparing her body for conscious conception and the birthing of her second child.
Since then she has gone onto complete
Justine and Lyssa's Yin Yang yoga teacher training,
Poppy peri, pre & postnatal yoga training, Jane Hardwicke Collings, 'A course in pregnancy the inner journey & healing from previous traumatic birth'

She is also pursuing training to become an infant massage instructor/ consultant with IMIS.

Thakshi is also a dentist at Pacific smiles dental clinic in Wagga where she has been able to holisticly care for patients for the past 11 years and is currently blessed to be a full time mumma to two little humans.

In one of Thakshi's mum's and bubs classes or mother's circles you can expect to reconnect with your body and start the healing journey postpartum. Whilst simultaneously connecting with your baby and other mummas in a safe and contained space.

'Modern motherhood can often be an isolating experience, each woman carrying her own unique joys and heart aches. It is a period where deep honest connection with other mothers is needed in a space free of judgement. I hope to welcome and hold space for your entire being as you slowly birth into the mother you were always destined to be. In the process learning from you and growing alongside you.' Thakshi
